Yes, she does call me a dork.....

A few observations from the outing: 1)The CJ definitely needs a new carburetor. Mine is functional but very worn out; National Carburetors will be getting my business. 2)I need to fix that exhaust leak. I'm pretty sure the exhaust manifold has a crack in it, because I'm seeing an area on the surface that is blackened. 3)That squeaking noise has got to go! Pretty sure my shackle bushings have seen their last days.

All in all, despite Brooke picking on me and saying ***** at the 1:20 mark, the CJ performed very well, and I'm happy. I'm watching the rain wash it right now, so we'll see how wet the inside is, after the sun comes out....hopefully not too bad.

Its not leaking between the manifolds is it? My gasket has blown out there, where the intake and exhaust bolt together. The surfaces on mine for the gasket are no longer straight, so I just slathered some exhaust putty around there and it held til I washed the engine off.

It might be, Rick, who knows, just one more thing on my parts list to buy.

Well, after several weeks of fun, I'm noticing a few things:

1) Do NOT ever use plastic couplers from "HELP", to join the 3/4 heater hose to the 5/8 heater hose; it will degrade and crack. Use brass.

2) Every once in a while, when I use my turn signal, the volt meter goes to 10v and the turn signal quits. This is intermittent and I have yet to find the cause.

3) The blow-by has mysteriously stopped. I do have a bit of moisture that is still evident at the base of where the head mates to the block, as well as from the filler cap, but the spewing from the dipstick has stopped.

4) This CJ-5 WILL easily go 80MPH and is relatively stable (as far as CJ-5s go), especially when you have an 18-wheeler barreling down on you, and the driver isn't paying attention (story for another day).

5) API GL-4 SAE 80 oil makes all the difference in the world for keeping the transmission and transfer case quiet.

6) The Motorola AM radio is pretty useless, when you're driving a CJ.

7) CJs should NOT have turbo mufflers, when they're equipped with 258 I6 engines.

8) Exhaust leaks WILL drive you insane, after a period of time.

9) Carter YF 1bbl carburetors are adequate for the 258 engine.

10) 1976 Jeep CJ-5s are more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

What's up with #7? Sound goofy on a 6 cylinder?

That sucks. I don't recall ever hearing a turbo on an I6; usually Flowmasters or something.

I was a little apprehensive about installing a 3 inch Hooker Aero-chamber but it worked out really well. Sounded much better than I figured it would.

I have a turbo muffler on mine, was almost as loud as the glasspack I replaced with it. I put the cat back on, hardly a rumble now.

I can deal with the turbo muffler for now, since it's new (PO put it on).

My mother-in-law has been pretty sick for the last month or so and she passed away last Friday; Brooke went back to Idaho to help take care of her dad for a while. I mounted the new exhaust manifold on this evening and just got the new carburetor in from national carburetors yesterday. Everything should be buttoned up by tomorrow. Not feeling very social right now so you have to excuse me everybody.

Sorry to hear that Flynes about your mother-in-law. I just buried my sister, who was only 57, just two weeks ago and feel your pain.
