I had my first jeep stolen just a few years back so i understand your pain, the cops will be no help. if you have any pics then you need to post the crap out of them and start looking in every nook and cranny and backwoods trail in your town. a few fellow jeepers found my heap torched and swamped only 1000 yrds behind the cop shop and they only knew it was mine cause i posted pics on the local forum. good luck.

that was my thought too. seriously though, i hope you get it back. whomever took it had to spend a considerable amount of time getting it out of there since it wasn't rolling. maybe someone in the neighborhood saw something.

Ask neighbors if they've seen anything.

I X2 on asking the neighbors. Was it in the street like that on stands? Could have been the City, a begrudged neighbor. Towing companies will tow anything, without asking, for cash. Check with your local building code enforcement board if it was in the street, they may have removed it without asking if the neighbors complained. Usually they post something, but that could have been removed. Did it have a license plate on it? if not, they could consider it abandon.

Thanks for all of the advice guys. It's nice to know that people got your back!

So I called the cops last night, they had no record of the city towing it so they decided to send out an officer to investigate. When he got there he took my title and ran the vin to see if it turned up with anything and got nothing. He and I were both perplexed as it was on jack stands (I am refinishing the wheels) and the wheels were right in front of the apartment! Why would they take my Jeep and the jackstands of a jeep that had no steering column and no wheels when my cj7 that is in great condition, looks a lot nicer and actually drives was sitting right there? This was what was mind boggling.

So the cop decided to go to neighbors after a while, mind you it was 12 at night. One of my neighbors finally came out and talked with the officers and told him that it was towed by a company called GB towing and they had it up and out in half an hour! The neighbor also said that a couple of trucks were with the tow truck and were city trucks. So the cop called a bunch of towing companies and sure enough a 1978 Jeep was towed in the afternoon!?!?

I never got notice of this or anything (no orange sticker or violation sticker) and they never told the police nor logged it into the system! How ridiculous can the city be? They waste the time of the police and they cause a lot of unneeded stress. I understand that it probably was an eyesore (not to me but others) and if they had given me a week I would have sold it for cheap and just not worried about it...

So I haven't called the towing company to figure out how much it is going to cost to pick it up

I am just going to sell it now. The reason I bought it was because it was an all original unmolested renegade and I liked the look of it in its original condition. I am going to be putting it on Craigslist soon.

What legal leg do I have to stand on due to the fact that I wasn't notified nor was anyone notified? I am not disputing the fact that it should have been towed, I just don't understand the whole process and why it is such a surprise!!

Anyways, thanks for the help and advice guys! Nice to be part of the Jeep community...

Chris

Well, glad that you found it. Still pretty severe to take something away without it even being on the ground. Did I miss something or why was it towed? Was it parked illegally? Anyways, wish that I were closer and in the market for another jeep. Good luck.

I would be worried they caused damage attempting to get it on the flat bed! Sounds like they just drug it up there. Again, go to the local building department for the city. Figure out what happened.

You stated Apartment, so was the vehicle in the apartment complex parking lot? If so, check with your landlord, I am guess they called and had it removed as it was on their property. You most likely have something in your lease about abandoned vehicles and making sure all vehicles you own are registered. How long was it on stands? I'm afraid you are SOL on getting towing charges or damages back because you are most likely in violation of your lease. Before confronting your lease managment, read your lease, this may be your nonintended fault. Did they know who owned the jeep? Its their responsibility to keep their property clean in order to keep the peace with all the neighbors. Sorry buddy, I feel for you. Lets hope there is no damage.

Here is the picture of the situation exactly!

Sorry not click free yet:

I think it has to be a neighbor as my landlord is cool and I live in a cottage so it is not a a big fancy complex. I am going to call the city department right now and try to get to the bottom of it. It was very suspicious that the neighbor across the street new everything about what happened right down to the towing company!? She was the one that gave the officer the towing companies number!

I am moving at the end of the month to a place with a yard but this still is not a cool situation...why can't they let people just live even if they have old jeeps that are awesome? Maybe she was jealous her husband drives an old civic
