I ditched the OEM look because of the quality of the aftermarket gauges. I might have stayed with the OEM if they were readily available new, but decided to go the route of double d fab and AutoMeter gauges.

Here is a link from my build thread: (see post 402 of my build thread)

Cable driven.

Personally I like the look and feel of the Cj dash, it is properly 1970s. However I do agree with the comments about the crap aftermarket OEM type gauges. Rarely have I seen such rubbish touted to discerning consumers.

Fortunately most gauges can be replaced with 2 and a bit inch chrome bezel gauges and look roughly similair. It is also possible to buy chrome bezels seperately about $8 each, allowing you to buy black bezeled gauges which are more plentiful. I am very tempted to replace the entire lot with Smiths instruments, slightly odd in an American vehicle but they are well made and reliable and not terribly expensive. They are also 1960s/70s style with chrome bezels and apart from saying "Smiths" would look good.

The only one which cannot is the speedo housing. Apart from niggles with the temperature and fuel gauges the rest of my speedo housing works absolutely fine. I would stick personally with the standard style gauges when it comes time to rebuild the dash.

The pointless knobs and indicator lights are hard to get OEM with any quality. They have been replaced in their entirety on my 84, fiddled with on my 1981. Worst rubbish on the dash, I bought new indicator lights and half fell apart withn 3 weeks.

Even the cig lighter still works!

Not sure if this is custom or if it is factory.
