So I'm thinking about building a Jeep CJ-7 from the ground up. I currently own a YJ and love it. I just want to pick up a new hobbie for the next few years and would love to really have something to be proud of. I'm looking for any suggestions on where I might start. Any and all help would be great!!!
The better idea is to rob a bank, then invest it into a mutual fund or cd.
In seriousness though, if money isn't a limiting factor and you really want to build a CJ, start with a frame. After the frame get the axles you want. Then build from there to suit your tastes.
I agree with Hoss though, why not change the front clip instead?
I guess I just want to really challange myself. Money is an issue to a point, but I really want to build a beast, take my time and make it damn near perfect!!
YJ is still a better starting point IMHO...stronger frame, wider frame (makes axle swaps easier), galvanized tub. Since you're 'building a beast' you'd be tossing out the weaker drivetrain components of either vehicle, so at the end of the day you just need a good solid frame, tub and front clip of your choice to get started.
I'd suggest finding a decent CJ in the $2 - $3K range. You want to look for a good frame, no reason to build on a rusted out, bent POS. In NC you should be able to find one with a good tub that may need a lil TLC.
Start thinking about what you want to build from there; Outboard D44's / D60's, V8, auto / stick, SOA / SUA, fiberglass, etc.??? These things will / should help you in picking out the platform to start with and what you can use / reuse in the build.
It won't be cheep, it'll take ALL your time, and during all that swearing you will have a blast. You'll also meet a lot of new friends!
I didn't mean your current YJ, I meant another one. You should have no problem finding a decent 4 banger or carb'd 6 banger YJ for under $2k...it'll be in better shape than any comparably priced CJ-7. Sell the drivetrain, front clip & dash and start building.
I would second the YJ starting point, there are some benefits there already. Another option may be a partially built unit, with some of the modifications that you plan on doing anyway.
There is a cd by Rick russel called the AJ-8 where he shows a fairly detailed build up of a completely aftermarket CJ with TJ style suspension, etc. It is a good watch and covers some interesting bits including the elec harness. Having said that I would also agree that the YJ would make a good starting platform and could be a great project...
