Jeep broke again...(details inside)

This morning I started the Jeep up to go to work like usual but it had a very rough idle. I thought it was cause it was only about 22F and once she warmed up things would be fine. Well they weren't! Here is the symptoms aside from the lumpy idle it feels like there is only half the cylinders firing. And it won't rev past 2K, if I try to go any higher then that it will stall out as soon as I take my foot off the gas. Basically the thing has no freakin power and its not drivable, I think it ignition related but I am going to check my chiltons & hayes manuals for ideas.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Marc

(figures... I was going to actually clean the outside of the Jeep tomorrow cause it was gonna be 52, but it looks like I am going to spend the rest of the day fixing her)

Timing chain might have jumped a tooth. I know it doesn't happen that often with a chain but I have had it happen to me. Check your timing to see where it is.

Jeff thats a good suggestion but I'm thinking its more a faulty ignition component because its not a constiant thing... when I was messing with the jeep last night this problem would come and go so I'm thinking its electrical somehow. Like for instance I drove about 1/4 mile and everything was fine but when I came to a stoplight it would lose power again.

Well then, I would start eliminating the obvious like cap and rotor and coil. Make sure all of those are working correctly.

I would definitely start with the simpler stuff and go from there.

I know you said you think it is electrical but it could be a stuck float in the carb. This happened to me and it sounds similar. Mine was on a 258 I6 and I don't know what you have but worth checking out. I rebuilt my carb for about twenty bucks worth of parts.

Sometimes a plugged catalytic converter will cause the engine to run poorly and have no power.

i had that same problem with mine and i spent about 3 days trying to figure out what the problem was. (my car would top out at 25 mph). it turned out that i had a hole in the gasket at the exaust manifold that was leaking air from the air intake into the engine to the exaust and skipping my engine completly causing my engine to flood. when i hooked up a timing light it was skipping even after i put new spark plugs, sparkplug wires, distributer cap, and many other peices. after i replaced the gasket it stopped skipping and my car ran smoothly. you should look at the gasket and see if it looks worn.

Well I reset the timing to 10 BTDC and gave the jeep a good once over... the problem seems to have gone as quickly as it came. But I still need to rebuild my carb cause its all F'ed up, it has an electric choke that isn't even hooked up and I don't know what the heck else its missing. Does anyone have a link to information on rebuilding one? Mine is a Motorcraft 2 barrel (thats all I know about it).

Also I started developing a new problem, when ever I turn left the jeep cuts out... anyone experience this before?
