Jeep acts like it is running out of gas when driving on slight incline

I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen before?

79 CJ5 304 stock motor and carb.

While I am driving down the road cruzin along, and the road starts goin up slightly on a small incline (not all the time) all of a sudden the jeep feels like it is running out of gas and starts stumbling and acting like it wants to die
(tank has been full and half full when this happens) then I smell an odor that is hard to describe?? kind of like gas and exhaust mixed ....I was thinking it is like flooding it self out??

it does it for a block or 2 then goes back to runnin fine?? like nothing ever happened? but it does not do it on every slight incline I drive on?? only in one area by my house?? It's like the Bermuda triangle for my Jeep!!

any thought's?

Thanx for your time.

Check the carb float level to see if it's set to the correct spec.
When was the last time you replaced the fuel filter?
Make sure ALL fuel lines are in good shape snd connections are tight.

IF you have the f'filter the has the nipple for the return line. Make dang sure you have that return line fitting set at 12'o clock position.

So I went and checked out a few things.... PO must have taken the fuel filter out and replaced with an inline.... PO got me before on other items!!.. I had a thread going and I ended up replacing everything on the front end of the motor due to broken bolts and timing cover held together with RTV.... long story and a lot of money later!!

I took some pics of what he did.... when I replaced the front end of the motor I also replaced the fuel pump and hooked everything back up the way he had it... but after reading on the forum and seeing some pics of what filter should look like . I will have to redo that as well.

I think that is the return line down there?? that I see with no hose on it?? and an inline filter coming from the tank to the fuel pump.

looks like he wrapped some insulation around the fuel line to keep it from getting hot??

does anyone have any pics of the way it should be so I can do it right?? correct routing of fuel line etc...so what I can tell is, he has an inline filter before the fuel pump ( silver filter by open line) then coming out of the top of the fuel pump he has another inline filter before the carb with insulation wrapped on the line... I am thinking this is my issue??

Any help with pics would be great!!!

Thanx!!

i have had exactly the same and it turned out to be a split hose in the fuel supply line above the tank.

As you nose up the pump has to suck harder and more air gets in.

The way to check is to put in a short length of clear hose and look for large bubbles.

Jack718**** no sir, I am not down shifting .... just cruzzin along in 3rd gear...

thanks for he pics guys!!

Bagus Jeep**** I will check the condition of my fuel lines thanx..

so should I leave that section of metal fuel line going to the carb and just replace the correct filter with the one that is there, and run rubber fuel line all the way back to the metal return line??

I think that is the return line ?? I will have to get under there and trace it back.

You really need to check the float adjustment in that carb

a rebuild probably would not hurt. Do these carbs do well after a rebuild? I have rebuilt Quadra-jets and they never seem to be right??
