J3229510 Distributor Condenser

What purpose does this condenser serve exactly?

I'm trying to find out if its necessary without a radio installed or if it affects the electronic distributor in some way?

Does it hook into the red wire with black stripe coming off the ignition coil lead?

Thanks for info!

There are various sources of radio interference in a vehicle, anywhere there is an air gap and current passing across you can get it. This includes the alternator as well as the distributor and plugs.

With an electronic ignition there are no contact breakers but there is still an issue with the air gap in the distributor interfering with the electrical circuits.

If you can hear a popping sound on the radio when the engine is running slowly you need to suppress the coil with a capacitor from the battery side of the ignition coil to a ground. This keeps the distributor noise from being conducted through the battery lead into the electrical system of the vehicle.

This is the capacitor you can see on the circuit diagarms of electronic ignitioned CJs of the late seventies.

In summary, you do not need it if no radio is fitted and it will not affect the electronic ignition.

Depends on where the 'Capacator' ('Condenser') is located in the system.

The 'Condenser' in the distributor keeps electrical current from arcing over the breaker points when they open,
Making the breaker points last MUCH longer.

The 'Condenser' when mounted on the coil bracket, hooked to the Positive terminal on the ignition coil,
Is to cut back on radio interference,

The 'Condenser' in an HEI distributor is mounted next the module,
It's function is to cut down on radio noise.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm wondering if the J3229510 is used on older models for both the radio at ignition coil and for the distributor? A lot of places are calling it a distributor condenser.
