Yup, CSP is talking about the coupler from the steering shaft/steering column to the steering box.
I get mine from the Jeep supply houses.
Should be about 5 pieces to it,
Boot, bell, spring clip, internal spring and two wedge blocks.
I think I have one around here someplace if you need pictures.

Making a rag joint out of a tire sidewall works pretty good too.

I don't have any idea what this coupling looks like, And why do I need it if I already have power steering in my CJ now? Is the J20 connected to the box differently and thats why I need it? Pics or a link would be great.

thanks,

Am I reading this correctly? I am getting ready to replace a leaky steering box in a '79 CJ7 with power steering. I can basically replace it with a J20 for about the same price, but a better box that will bolt up to my stock mount?

yep As long as you get the same year J20 box ( for hose comatibility) and a manula steering coupler it will bolt up. And you'll have a variable ratio steering gear box.

Bring the bell coupler to the parts house. If it doesn't fit the box with little to no effort, tell them to try again. If the coupler is used, make sure that the splines are CLEAN.

Took 3 tries before I gave up and went to PSC for a reman'd box.

Thsi is what the coupler looks like. Lower Manual Steering Shaft Coupler Kit by Omix-Ada and Other Jeep Parts and Jeep Accessories by 4 Wheel Drive Hardware-RH3

It's at the bottom of the steering shaft. You will have to cut the nipple off for the coupler to slide over the splines.

The CJ box at Autozone is about 35.00-40.00 more than the J20 box from Advance so shop around.

OK after reading this I've decided to upgrade to power steering in my 78 CJ-7. I just ordered a gear box and pump from advanced. got em both for 188.98 after a discount and free shipping!!! Just need to order an HD bracket, pullys and hoses. I'm sure i'll have some questions once I start the install, hope someone will be here to help!!!!!

Thanks man, I see you have a 79 cj-7 with the L6, same set up as mine. Do you have power steering in yours? Can you post a few pics so I have a reference?

thanks,
The J20/FSJ boxes mount exactly the same way but the spline count and diameter of the input shaft is different. A J20 box with power steering has the same spline count and dia. as a CJ box with manual steering (or so I've read). So a bell coupler from a power CJ column won't work on the J20 box.

In the May issue of JP mag there was a write up on 10 factory flubs for jeeps. They talk about the steering shaft coupler and suggest replacing the entire shaft with one from Borgeson or Flaming River which have solid u-joints. Has anyone done this upgrade along with the power steering or J20 gear box swap?? They are kind of pricey and I was wondering if it's worth the extra money.

My parts arrived today. I also found the engine pulley on e-bay for $10 +shipping. Been calling around all day and haven't been able to find a pump bracket yet. If any one has one laying around Please let me know!!

Ordered a drop pitman arm from ebay for $48 with shipping. Wish I had done this when I put in my lift kit, since after the p/s upgrade I will have a drop pitman arm for manual steering that won't be needed. You could save alot of money if you figure out all the upgrades first, before you started! That would definately keep you from ordering the same parts over again. Anyway still trying to find the pump bracket....
