J20 power steering upgrade

Did anyone find the 'exact' part number for the early to mid 80's J20 power steering gear box that has the 3.5" piston? I know for a fact that Cardone 27-6529 is from the 70's, might be the 3.5" piston, but has the flare fittings while the CJ7 needs/has the O ring type hoses. I looked until my fingers bled but it seems that the O ring version runs by the part number 27-6528 but cannot be verified as the 3.5" piston model... They used them in J10's, Grand Wagoneers, etc..

Is there any super specific part number for the O ring style, mid 80's, J20 with the 3.5" piston????

From what I could find if you want the bigger piston you have to go with the earlier, flare style boxes. I plan to just get a J20 box for a 76, get new lines with flare fittings, and get adapters to allow the flare lines to work with my existing power steering pump.

Yeah, if no one can come up with a magic part number for the 80's gear, I will likely do the same.. I am putting it on a 1983 CJ7 258.

My suggestion would be.....order a J20 box, look for the larger cap, and four mounting holes. When they try to give you the wrong one, say "no, the one I want has four mounting holes and a larger cap". Kind of a pain, and eliminates using rockauto, but at least at the local shop if it isn't right they can reorder it until it's the right one.

I just installed a J20 box in my '77 CJ5 last night.
I bought it directly from Autozone online. I used my angle grinder to cut off the little nubbin that was originally used as a pilot diameter for a rag joint coupling. I have all the stuff at work, I'm home now, but can look up the part numbers tomorrow if you want. I think it was for a 1976 J20...
Anyway, it does have the flare fittings and the large piston and 4 mounting holes. It was around $125 plus core, the core can be dropped off at any Autozone store. The bell coupling spline is the same as my old coupler from the manual box. I have 3 more big piston boxes (all leak like crazy) and any of the pitman arms fit just fine. For my application, I had to ream the TRE taper bigger to fit the larger Moog TRE's.
Oh, and the bell coupling is a little close to the bottom tank of my radiator, I'll probably remount the radiator a little higher to avoid any problems.
Other than that, it was a straight bolt in deal!!

What is the measurement of the end cap on the J20 compared to the CJ7 end cap? Any other physical differences?

here is the part listing direct from my order confirmation:
Duralast/Steering Gear (Power Steering)
For your 1976 Jeep J20 5.9L 4BL OHV 8cyl
Part Number: 6529

End cap for this steering gear is same as my other 3 leaky units...I can measure when I get home if you need.

The 76 will be differnt fromt the 83. One uses o-rings the otehr uses flare fittings. The j20 box has a larger end car then regular box. I think is is ver 4" on the J20 box.

I used Cardone 27-6505 purchased from Rock Auto for $75 plus $25 core charge. It measures 3.5" at the cap. It's listed as a 78 J20 part, and also some big GM cars of that era. It's the flare fitting type, but it's easy enough to convert from flare to O-ring and vice versa.

How can that be when my small bore steering gear cap measures 3 and 13/16's ? The big piston gear should be at least 4 or bigger?

Inside diameter, not overall diameter.

Here's my quick measurements with a tape, not calipers:

1978 J20 box: ID-3.5", OD-4.25"
1978 CJ5 power steering box: ID-3.0", OD-3.75"
