instrument cluster
Can someone tell me what is the best way to remove the instruments in the dash. I have an 85 cj with factory clock and tach and need to do some repair work on both. Thanks

My opinion is to lower the windshield (carefully, the hinges maybe frozen with rust), remove the dash pad, remove the steering column bezel, and remove allof the dash screws. The dash will then be able to move a few inches, and this should give you the room needed to get behind everything.
I'm sure there are folks on this forum who can remove those items with the dash in place, but I'm not one of them, it's just too tight back there for me.

Personally I just remove the entire dash. It makes life alot easier in the end!

If it is just the clock and tach that you need to remove you can reach up behind them and unscrew the 'U' bracket that holds each one in. The gauge will then slide out the front of the dash and you can unplug the wires to them. Putting them back in will probably be more difficult then removing them, unless you remove the entire dash, but it can be done.
