Installed HEI dizzy-Jeep won't start?

Installed my HEI distributor today and now I get nothing when I turn the key. I ran power directly from the battery to ensure 12 volts but I have a lot of wires that aren't connected now from the old distributor and from the coil. Any idea where my issue is?

Do you have spark when cranking the engine?

Slowly move the distributor Untill it tries to start.

It is not even cranking. I just went out and took the cap off and what I think is the coil is completely melted on one side.

Was my +12v supposed to connect to the terminal that said BAT or Coil?

You wire the 12v to the "bat" to power it directly. The "coil" is for a tach, and is optional.
But since it won't even turn over, did you also burn out the solenoid? THe HEI is pretty simple, but I've had problems before from cheaply made parts. On mine, the plug would get bent, and I'd have to take it apart to fix. Maybe you shorted out something?

The good news is that "rebuild" kits for the HEI are pretty cheap on ebay. I think I paid $30 for one that included the cap/coil/rotor/module

Joking aside, I'm pretty sure mine said 'BAT' on the right and 'TACH' on the left. Did yours actually say 'COIL'?

I had it wired to the one that said BAT. The other side says coil. I am going to chalk it up to cheap crap and have the seller send out another cap and try it again.

One other question. Are these distributors based on a factory model that I could just run to the auto parts store and pick up another cap?

I can't believe yours said 'COIL'. Maybe I've lost my mind.

I don't know who made yours so I can't say for sure but all of the parts should be interchangeable from any Chevy V8 with a 4-pin module. Don't hold me to that, though
