Ignition '84 CJ7
My ignition does not seem to catch on my steering column. Is this a common problem? I'm going to pull the steering wheel off on Tues. any suggestions?
Welcome to the Forum, if you fill in your profile you will get better advice, still wrong but more specifically wrong.
Before you pull the wheel look at the various threads on here concerning steering column rebuilds.
It sounds like you are turning the key but it does not Start?
There is a complex arrangement behind the lock cylinder consisting of a plastic "sector" which is turned by the cylinder. This has teeth which emgage with a long strip called the "rack". AT the far bottom of the rack is a hook that engages the ignition switch.
If you are turning the key and it is not going to START it could be for a variety of reasons:
1. Sector has slipped and moved relative to the rack, maybe because the Sector is chewed up
2. Rack is not enanging with the switch
3. Switch needs adjusting (it can move up and down the column)
4. Ignition switch is bust
Before stripping the column you may care to try adjusting the ignition switch, it is secured near the bottom of the column. Loosen it up and see if it makes the difference.
The only difficult part in the column is removing the steering wheel. It needs a puller, you can make one or buy one but brute force will not get it off.
