Idles rougher since river
My 1984 cj7 with the 258 started to idle rougher since I drove it through a river crossing sunday. Its not a deep crossing about half way up my 32 inch tires. I did hit the water kinda hard once. It started to idle rough but not real bad. Also when its at a real low rpm and cold it will die but when its warm it will stay running but its just runs rough but only at a low rpm and thats it. Higher rpms it runs fine. Any help would br great.

Take the distributor cap off and dry it out.

While drying out the distributor cap, check it for cracks or spider web like marks inside it. WD40 sprayed inside the cap also helps keep the condensation down.

Actually, moisture in the cap usually leads to carbon tracking...
Little cob web looking tracks from one terminal to another inside the distributor cap. Once these trails from one terminal to another are burned in, they don't come out. A can of WD-40, through cleaning of the inside of the distributor cap and rotor top, and try it again. Once the carbon tracking is in the cap, there is no way to get rid of it, so change your distirbutor cap for a BRASS TERMINAL cap and good rotor when you can to help prevent this in the future... Also, UPGRADE to the large/tall distributor cap... Use a little dielectric grease on the terminals and rotor nose before you button things up. If you have the large diameter cap, you can put dielectric grease in the groove under the distributor cap edge, and that will help cut down on the water that can enter the cap... DO NOT BUY A BLACK DISTRIBUTOR CAP! Black distributor caps are colored with 'Carbon Black', a waste product that is recycled to color some plastics and tires... The carbon is conductive and will promote carbon tracking inside the cap!

There are a BUNCH of bad HEI's out there right now... You might want to check up on yours to make sure it's not doing something stupid... ----------------------- Ask for a distributor cap and rotor with BRASS TERMINALS for a 1979 Chevrolet Truck C10 1/2 ton P/U 2WD. Brass terminals, NOT BLACK CAP! Try this, http://www.autozone.com/R,2177495/vehicleId,1279101/initialAction,partProductDetail/store,677/partType,00491/shopping/partProductDetail.htm ![]()
