I have the T-18A Whats next

I Have come across a T-18A. I have a 79 CJ5 all Stock, The T-18 A came out of a 78 Ford Two Wheel drive.

I need to now how and what i need to put this in my jeep.

I am also thinking of going with a dana 300 and not using the 20 thats in it.

I know someone will help me out. Thanks

Hi Steve, I have a mid 70's Ford T18A and a 75 cj5.
I haven't done the swap yet so I'll be watching this thread.

So far, what I gathered is;
The T18 needs the T150 bell housing, a longer front drive shaft, shorter rear drive shaft and an adapter to the t-case.
(Advanced adapters, around 400 bucks).
I think the pilot shaft needs swapping out as well, and I think that's available with the adapter as a kit.

There is good info at their website and at jeeptech.com

Or you can get extremely lucky and find the original bellhousing made for the T-18a to go with the jeep. Better yet, find the original T-18a from a CJ-5 (with the Dana 300 Transfer!) and buy the whole thing for $1100. And it has alloy wheels and new Kumho MTs!


Ok sorry I'm still bragging over that lucky find....If you have the tranny out, I am assuming you do, figure out which ratio first gear is. Some have the 6.32:1 granny gear. Others have a 4 somthing (i think):1 1st gear. there was a thread a while back about this and what it takes to convert the T18a to the 6.32:1 first gear ratio, if desired.

I am having my current T-150 replaced with a T-18a on Monday. The T-18a came out of a 77 CJ5 with a I6. It is going into a 77 CJ5 with a 304. I have everything to replace the T-18a tranny with (ie. yokes, driveshafts, skid plate. The T-18a will match up to the 304, Correct? I even have the four spacers for the skid plate. Both have Dana 20's. Is that all I need for the swap?

Jeff you have what you need. The T18 bolts up to the bellhousing, not the engine. The bellhousing to engine bolt patterns on the V8 and I6 are the same.

You had better check out that transfer case if the tranny truly was an original CJ tranny. The Jeep T18 will not bolt up to the Dana 300. You either have a Fod T18 converted to work with a Dana 300 or a Dana 20 transfer case.

hey i have a 79 CJ-5 with the T-18a and i love it. Did off roading for first time and the thing handled like a champ. I was going place a H1 couldnt go.
