I found a CJ5 hardtop for sale!!!

It is one of the nice AJ fiberglass tops but the owner says it fits a 76-79 only but I think that is just because of the tailgate. I am pretty sures it should be fine for an 80 with a solid tail. Does anyone know for sure?

I don't think it will but I would have to see it. My first CJ5 was a '78 with a tailgate. The gate was rounded on top not flat, so that could be and issue. If you can get it for a cheap price, I would see if they'll let you see if it fits first.

Even if it didn't quite fit, I'd be inclined to buy it and make it work. The rest of the tub is the same between the 76-83 CJ5s... a little tailgate area issue should be easy to take care of.

I was thinking the same thing about just the tail gate making the rear hatch sit differently. I can easily take care of that and have a good looking top to boot for a good price.

$500 and the seals and windows are all in good shape. It was painted white though but I want to repaint it the stock black color.

Okay, I'll bite: What is the difference in the 80-83 CJ5 tailgates? Seems to me they are the same as the 76 (or earlier) - 79 tailgates.

I don't know as there is a difference. I know the CJ5 tailgate is different than the CJ7 tailgate. The ones in the CJ5s (mine anyway) have a rounded lip at the top and can be opened/removed like a truck tailgate.

The 80-83 CJ5's do not have any tailgates. That is actually the difference between the model years.

My 76 didn't have a tailgate (originally) either. So having a tailgate or not is no indication of age.

In 1980 the option to have a tailgate went away for the CJ5 but if some came without then this most likely would be fine.
