I am a criminal?!

A few months ago I bought a 1982 Jeep CJ7 for $1000 from a HS buddy of mine and it it has been a slippery slope indeed!

I had a ball working on the Jeep bu knew I kneded a steering column and dash and the engine and tyranny we're an unknown.

I needed parts! A lot of parts. Soon I wan $2500 into this and still needed many parts. So I looked on CL...

After a wasted trip to Chattanoogs, Louisiville and Indianiapolis, I was done. All I found always POS rust buckets. Then I found a 1986 CJ 7 for $2500. But he could not find the title. I was so excited about the good deal I bought it on the promised he would get me the tittle.

5 days layer and still no title. I have a bill of sale and he had cashed my check for $2500.

He says he is still looking for it and also applied for a replacement.....but I've got nothing. I'm not sure what my legislation resource is? In Alabama it is illegal
To buy or sell wo a title. So I am just as guilty

Im thinking of just parting out the Jeep and putting as much as I can on the 82.

Suggestions welcome!

Contact the DMV with the VIN and see if the vehicle is reported stolen. If not the lost title submission should result in a successful purchase.

Good Luck...........

That.

Once that is filed you should be fine with just the bill of sale so long as VIN numbers are included. You should be able to apply for a new title in Alabama then.

Call your local DMV up and tell them he lost the title and that you have a bill of sale. They will tell you if you need anything else. I have sold a vehicle without the title in hand with just a bill of sale then I filled a release of liability so I couldn't get sued if the person I sold it to didn't register it in their name.

hope it works out for you,
my friend in TN has an old 1947 chevy pickup that he was fixing up, but his wife or he one misplaced the title.

so far he has not been able to get a replacement.

I assume different states handle the titles differently.

I make it my "rule one" no matter, the good deal, just do not buy a vehicle without the title.

I normally buy such crap, that I have so many other problems, I do not title problems.

^^Agree^^

It should be the seller's problem to come up with the title. I wouldn't accept a vehicle without title even if it was for free... had a good friend spend thousands of dollars and many hours of his own sweat/labor on a project Jeep only to have it returned to the rightful owner (victim of vehicle theft). The folks I've talked with at motor vehicle said they see it happen frequently when people try to get plates on a recently purchased vehicle.

How long have you been waiting? When I bought mine, the seller had to apply for a replacement title, which took almost 6 weeks to come. He showed me the registration in his name, so I trusted him enough to take the jeep and wait for the title. He eventually got the new one, took it to have it notarized, then mailed it to me.

In the 90s, I had made a side-job out of driving to massachusets to purchase old Jeeps that had no title "for parts". In Mass, everything needs a title, and it takes an act of god to get one replaced. So those vehicles without titles could be purchased for way, way below value.

But in Maine, we only title newer vehicles. So I'd tow them back, clean them up, and sell them.

For the OP, if he got a good deal, then it might be worth the hassle. Some states have a better process for titles. I think his state does not title vehicles older then 35 years? well, that gives you a couple year to fix it up.. then you wont need a title!

Yep, I "purchased" my 69 Cougar in Alabama and bringing it to Ohio turned out to be a chore because it didn't have a title. Ohio BMV could not fathom why a car would not have a title. OHP wouldn't even do an inspection on it because "All cars must have a title. They are sold with one and needed to register."

That was a fun 3 weeks.

Wow NJ has some pain in the butt things with DMV, but if an owner misplaced there title they can go to any DMV office with the VIN and ID. It the vehicle was last registered in their name they print it out right there. Now if you don't know who the registered owner is it can be a real pain. But a mechanic can apply for a title. There is a process to do this but, the state has a way for them to get title when people leave there cars after the repair or just decide they don't want to fix it and leave the vehicle.

I was doing phone work at a J-yard one day here in Pa. In came a ratty '49 Harley Flathead & a pile of other "Metal". The yard owner saw my eyes pop and charged me $400 w/bill of sale only. It cost over $400 & about 6-8 hours & 2 court appearances! I even had to place an ad in the Allentown paper to notify the last owner that I was claiming the bike as mine. Last owner was a dead guy, & scrappers cleaned it out of his barn. Him(?) or his heirs could have claimed it! No title, no way, no how & I'll pay you what it weighs in scrap.

I bought a bmw 325 a couple of years ago from a car dealership in Az which went out of business before I got the title, maybe I was their last customer. I went to the MVD they did a level 1 inspection which just checked to see if it was stolen and that the VIN was correct. I sent a certified letter that the MVD printed out for me to the previous owner of record, they gave me that info to. A couple of weeks later the letter was returned "business closed". About a month later I took the letter to the MVD unopened, she attempted to call the previous owner on the phone, no answer and she printed me a new title in my name. Stuff like this happens.

In RI, if you have a vehicle older than 10 years, a title is not necessary. I had a title for my jeep. When I brought it to the registry at registration time they took it. Usually, you would get a revised one mailed to your home.

No so with the jeep, or any other 10+ y/o vehicle. That's the last time you'll ever see it...

I have the title to my '79 CJ, utility trailer, 26' boat & trailer, tractor, all bikes. But my 2005 'Vette didn't come w/one. I was told never take it anywhere for service & only get it inspected from the buyer!
