Installed everything today. Went the advance auto parts route with motorcraft wires and autolite coppers. My 79 is running better than before.
Looking to upgrade the coil and ignition control next using MSD.
Awesome thread JeepHammer. Please keep it up.

I know this has been asked a lot before, but i cant find the specific answer im looking for.....

As far as the ballast resistor goes, for using an MSD coil, as i understand it, all this resistor does is drop the voltage to the coil to less than 12vdc so the coil wont burn up? I started my jeep and i had ~3vdc across the two wire terminals (+&-) and ~8-9vdc across the coil + and battery -. I take this to mean that i do NOT need the additional ballast resistor, that all i need to do is drop in the MSD Blaster 3 and wire it up just the the stock one and i'm good to go.....correct?

spark plugs

When doing this upgrade you mention the spark plugs. Does this mean that I have to replace my plugs or is it just for tune ups sake? I just put my plugs in not to long ago but obviously if need be i will change them. What im wondering is if the new set up requires different plugs then found stock in the cjs. Thanks. and great write up with lots of amazing information

the wires however are 100% necessary? Or can the old (new) ones be used as well? I know it says it requires new ones but it also said that about the plugs so just making sure

You need new wires, the CJ ones won't attach to the new cap.

You get a noticeable performance gain out of it Red? Kind of excited to do this one after all the good things people have said about it.

Idle smoothed out a bit but i think im in need of a carb rebuild and fuel pump as well. The old coil confirmed my thoughts that i didnt need a resistor, and the plug wires were perfect length! Opened plugs up between .040 & .045. The whole thing took maybe 2 hrs and i was takin it slow. Longest part was gapping plugs!

Better throttle response and power curve seems smoother.
