D300

Well, I was getting the transfer case cleaned up today. I really hadn't looked too closely at it before, but it was covered in oil and dirt and more oil and dirt. There was silicon all over it and no gaskets . I guess I have to at least open it up and install the gaskets. I hadn't really planned on that. Any tips will be appreciated. Anything else I should check while I am in there?

Let me know if I can help in any way.

I just did the same thing as well. It's pretty easy, I didn't have any instructions, just kind of disassembled and reassembled. I was also 3 sheets to the wind when I did it so that tells ya how simple it really is. The worst part was after I got done I stepped(stumbled) back, looked at it, and thought "Wow, I just spent like 5 hours to replace 4 or 5 gaskets."

Well, this project was a good reason to buy an arbor press, I have always wished I had one. I found a great deal on one tonight. I got a rebuild kit for the 300 from Novak that will be here tomorrow, so the weekend should be fun. Thanks for the info guys. I am sure I will have questions.

Well, 4 beers later I have the Dana 300 completely torn apart and the parts and pieces nicely grouped together as they came out.

I only had one problem. One of the driveshaft knuckle nuts is kind messed up. I guess I beat on it too hard with not enough threads engaged Oh well, I am glad it was the nut and not the shaft. Thank goodness it was hardened.

Anyway, not one single gasket on this entire assembly. Seems strange to me. I will post some pics for my own reference later as it came apart. The more I drank the fewer pictures I took

It was almost fun and not nearly as hard as I thought it would be. I got to use my new bearing press twice So guys, does it go together as easy as it came apart? Did you guys check the play with a dial indicator when you put it back together? I guess I have to acquire a dial indicator and base.

Hutch,
We need to get you motivated, I have to have mine done for my trip to Hilton Head at the end of June.

Do you need my build log so you can move faster? We need to meet up when you're done, if not before.

If you need to order parts, I have a guy in GA that has given me Outstanding prices on parts, I usally order over $1000 plus at a time but still.

Fatman,
I was going to suggest that we meet up at some point. I was going to wait until I really hit something I couldn't figure out Anyway, I got the transmission bolted up on Friday... I hope the cross member will bolt up...

Here are some pics of the D300 tear down:

Man, I hope not. That would suck have to drive with one hand behind my back . The Chevelle is a 71 with a 'built' 454, Ford 9", 3 speed. It really needs a restoration.

So it seems you guys painted the 300 after you put it back together. I guess I can start reassembly tomorrow. I don't think I am going to replace the flux capacitor / torrington bearing. I have no idea how to get it out of the inside of the shaft.
