Howell FI install 77 CJ5 / 304

I've been spending 1-2 hours after work each night installing the new Howell FI kit. Like anything else, you find yourself buying stuff you didn't originally plan.

The kit: My kit came with the wrong throttle body plate so I had to send it back to Howell in exchange for the correct plate.
All the connections are weather pac and professionally loomed.
The computer is about 5"x6" and installs under the dash. If your dash is anything like mine, I had to make room. Removing the inside of the glove box yielded plenty room for the unit.

One of the great things about this install is how much of the original smog stuff is eliminated like the Smog pump, AIS system and 80% of the factory vacuum hoses.

It really makes the engine bay so much cleaner!

In addition to the FI, I installed the following:
Intake manifold
MSD 6A ignition box
Motor Craft dist. cap rotor (thanks jeephammer)
plugs, wires
air cleaner.

One last item I had to orderf from Howell to complete the install, I should have it up and running tomorrow.
I will post up some pics of the before and after.

I highly recommend this swap if your considering it.

I just finished installing the Howell setup on my 360 w/MSD6. I thought I had to run the Tach Signal wire to the (+) side of the coil but that caused it to dump way to much fuel from the injectors. Switched to the Tach signal from the side of the MSD box and it purrs like a kitten.

Are you gonna post pics in your build thread?

Jeff

Hrmmm.... I think I'm going to switch my tach signal to the MSD box tonight before I start it up.
I'm hoping to be cruzing before it gets dark tonight.

What did you use for an air cleaner?

After finishing up my FI last night I seen this on the side of the road with a for sale sign.

Picked it up for $13k

Ok back to the CJ.

The CJ must have picked up HP because last night when I pulled out of the driveway it actually spun the tires!
The throttle response is like night and day, I can't say enough good things about this swap.

I will pull the air cleaner and take some pics after lunch.

I still have to replace the clutch fan, shroud, and install my hand throttle.

Next weekend I plan on tackeling the PO's wiring debacle (I've seen 12" long wires with up to 5 butt connectors.. It's stupid silly)

I am planning to do the same mod to my 304 in the future. Did you buy an aftermarket intake manifold (ala Edelbrock) or did you get a stock AMC manifold?

Since the stock 304 in a CJ is a 2-barrel carb I am guessing you went to a 4-barrel set-up. If this is what you did, why did you go the 4-barrel route vs staying 2-barrel? Thanks in advance.

Nice Rubicon, will you be parting out the CJ [(selling the Howell :-) ] now that you have a new toy? Looking forward to more pics and write-ups.

Nice setup.. wish my wiring was nice/neat like that. I've been doing a mad thrash trying to get my CJ up/running for a trail ride next week. I just plugged everything in and zip tied stuff out of the way for now. I'll come back and tidy the wiring up later.

Yeah... gotta love the instant throttle response!!

I would sell the Rubicon before I sold the CJ. I have a real appreciation for the early jeeps. cfernandez; I've only had the CJ for 3 months now, the PO installed an edelbrock intake and carburetor. It was at it's worst when it was cold, you could forget about going anywhere until the thermostat hit 150 degrees.

I live in California, therefore the edelbrock intake and carburetor were illegal and would not pass smog. I bought a used intake (stock) from a jeep junkyard in Sacramento, had it bead blasted and cleaned up the flanges on my mill.
The howell FI kit comes with a 2 barrel throttle body because that's what comes stock on the 304. The throttle body is much larger than a 2 barrel carburetor and utilizes a 4 barrel air cleaner. That's the reason it looks like a 4 barrel.

Besrk: The kit comes with all the wiring harness just like you see it. They resemble a loom you find in a new car. Very clean and neatly packaged.

I fired it up this morning (51 degrees) and blasted off less than 20 seconds later. It didn't studder, backfire or do anything different a new 2008 model car would do. This kit is very cool indeed.
