My 62 CJ5 is bone stock, right down to the wheels (with the addition of some 235/75R15 mud terrains though).

Stock F-head (right down to the air cleaner), stock trans, transfer, 5.38's, etc. I just rebuilt the head (new valves and valveguides), adjusted the valves, set the timing and took it for a spin to see how she felt.

Flat ground, I was able to get it up to 66mph (GPS) Roughly 4100-4200rpms. Just had to see how far she'd go, as it ran WAY better than before. I used to be floored just to do 50mph. Now I have pedal to spare.

I'm VERY happy with my F-heads performance right now. And it's bone stock! yeeehaaaw!

I don't go fast in my jeep, but here in north Atlanta, you would get run over on the highway doing 55. I go 60 - 65 to work typically and cars pass me like I'm sitting still. Any slower and I would be scared. Forget about passing anyone down here because no one is going slower than 55.

I agree, not something I plan on doing again. lol Especially something I would not do for an extended period of time either!

I read somewhere (I cant remember the rpms, but it was based on factory stock) 50mph was top cruising speed. 35mph was best mileage.

Without an overdrive, and stock diameter tires, i'd keep it to 50mph. That's what i've always done and will continue to do so.

When I had my old 5 it was really pushing it to hit 60. Heck, 50 was putting a strain on things. However, it did just great about 5 mph crawling boulders!

What are the benefits and cons. That; the 5 speed has taller gears and an overdrive. Where is the hole in my reasoning? I goota know

Actually these old jeeps with 5:38's would be best suited for tooling a round on weelends on back country roads or on the trails. I won't take you long to get tired of it as a DD. These engines like to run a round 50 mph, thats there comfort zone without beating them. I would use it as it was intended, a slow trail machine, not a highway cruiser. If you do need to run down the interstate to get to a trail or whatever, take your time and stay out of other peoples way. You have a classic CJ -5, treat it as such and be happy it goes as fast as it does Off/road is where it will really shine, it will crawl a round all day on the trails at not much more than an idle in low range. You can jump out, snap some pitures of scenery and walk back up to the jeep and climb in without ever taking it out of gear. You can walk faster than it will move, but thats a good thing for enjoying the trails.

I run my cj-5 70-75mph down the interstate. But my CJ has 2.73's and 31's for now. 4.11's going in soon.

Man, i've got an old 4.2...the CJ will only get about 50-55 in 4th gear going south because the wind is allways blowing just about from the south here at nearly 25-30mph, headed back home i'm going north and the wind is at my back, can finally shift into 5th and get 65 or so. I'm running 31's with stock gears as far as i know, but i bought it used and it's an 82..never know what's in there.

Given it's aerodynamics, I'd say ~120MPH in free fall.
