How do you use drum brake resetting gauge ?.

I just bought this brake resetting gauge because I have a limited slip and spins both tires and it makes it hard to tell if I adjusted my brakes right. It's like a giant pair of calipers. You measure the inside of the diameter of the drum and it automatically moves the outside diameter calipers to the measurement. My auto tech. text book says it automatically sets the outside calipers to give you .010 of clearance. Well when I used it , I couldn't get the drums back on. So I ended up taking another measurement and adjusting the gauge a little. I put it back together and now my brakes are dragging. Am I not using this thing correctly ? The gauge scale is in mm or 1/32 so if after i measure the i.d. of the drums, I open the gauge 1/32 then that's 3 times more space than .010 So I don't know what to do.

I always liked the KISS method.
Give the adjuster 5 cranks, slip the drum on. If it goes on, give the adjuster 5 more cranks, slip the drum back on.
Do that until the drum won't go on, then back the adjuster off 5 cranks. Put the drum on and call it a day.

Sorry I can't be of any help with the calipers.

I believe the FSM says to adjust until the wheel will not spin then back off adjuster 1 full turn.

Yes , that is what it says. I just bought a 50 dollar tool. That won't work. Could it be I have extra thick heavy duty shoes on there and this tool only works for stock ?

I think the problem is that the shoes never sit in there perfect. They are held in by a couple of pins, and a few springs.
They are always crooked, cockeyed, opened up some, and general moving all over the place while you slide the drum on.
Getting an accurate measurement on them seems almost impossible to me.
