How do you tell if you have a Renegade?

Howdy everyone, I have a 77 CJ5. I was wondering if there is any way to tell if its a Renegade or any other special package by either the vin or the build tag in engine compartment. I have tried searching the web, but am unable to find any info on the subject, any help would be greatly appriecated. Thanks in advance.

The only way I knew I had one was because the lazy previous owner painted over the top of the original decals. I can still see the lines in the paint if I look at a certain angle. The only difference in a renegade and a non renegade is stickers. I don't believe any any of the components were different. I say just make it how you want.

It is not listed in the vin or the engine bay tag. There is really not a good way to tell if it is a orignal renegade.

Unless its been removed, repainted, or someone "created" a renegade. On that same note you could look for the slotted renegade rims. Wait for it... Wait for it... unless someone has replaced them OR someone installed then after the fact..

If it does what others don't..... you might have a Renegade.
If it goes where others won't..... you might have a Renegade.
If it likes to go out on it's own..... you might have a Renegade.
If it doesn't follow the normal rules..... you might have a Renegade.
If there are no markings of Chrysler on it anywhere.... you might have a Renegade.

there is NO way to tell if a Jeep came from the factory as a Renegade (or Laredo), unless you have all the original documents.

EVERY part of the renegade package was available as a dealer or buyer add-on (including the decals), and most all (including decals) are available from aftermarket as well.

add that to the fact that most owners swap parts like GI's swap stories, and things can get pretty convoluted down the line...

Like this, the previous owner told me it was a Renegade. Because it came with cruise control, under hood light, and the black plastic on the dash!
OK, whatever, were is the extra T18, transfer case and engine.

Thanks everyone for yalls input(Some replies were quite hilariuos). It does has aftermarket rims on it, it has been painted by the previous owner, although in a paint scheme that is VERY similar to a Renegade. The original owner were the famous country and western icons Tanya Tucker and Glenn Campbell.. I know that it is was purcased in California and won a Jeep rally in 1977(supposedly from San Antonio to Laredo). I am going to do some more digging and see what else I can find. Thanks again to everyone who chimed in.

I'll beg to differ on the Laredo.
If the trim tag code states it was optioned with Cara vinyl seats,
Then it was originally a Laredo.
That's the specific material used on the Laredo seats, And only the Laredo seats.

Well, Don't worry....... Yours isn't a Laredo.
The first year Laredo was 1980

I just read that all Renegades were Levis editions in 77. I looked at the sales brochure and it showed two Renegades, both had the Levis badge above the word Jeep. When I got mine several weeks ago, it had what appreared to have been white or cream colored seats........so if they were the original seats, that would also eliminate the Renegade! Thruout this process, I am enjoying all the learning about not only my Jeep, but all Jeeps in general.
