How do I refurbish my D300?

Okay I opened this thing up and I think it looks pretty good. I dont know how many miles are on it. The Gears all look in surprisingly good shape.

So how should I go about cleaning this thing up? Should I rebuild it? Is it worth it to rebuild? Or should I just run it?

If I am not gonna rebuild whats the best way to go about cleaning the rust, dirt, and grease off of it.

Thanks

If you have the time and about $150.00 I would rebuild it. The center thrust washers need attention from time to time. These cases are incredibly durable so you can more than likely get by with out a rebuild.

I ran one in my buggy with a 454 with no problems for a few years, well... I was counting the minutes, I though for sure I would blow it up

LOL

I asked if you guys thought I should!
I think my confusion came from seeing your post say D300 seals.

But I am starting to think I should just change out all the seals and then rebuild it with a 4:1 gear set down the road. In a few years when I have some money. I need to get moving so this can get on the road sooner then later!

Putting in the Lowmax 4:1 is the best mod I ever made and I have made a lot. I have one word of advice on pulling out the shift rails. Hold something over the hole above the shift rails or your retent ball bearing will launch out that hole like a rocket when you pull the rail past it. The instructions I had did not mention that but luckily, I found the ball.

Okay so I tore it all down....Except for the front and rear outputs. I am asuming that I would need to press bearings off and then remove gears to fully break it down from this point?

thanks

Brian

If it wasn't giving you problems I would just clean it up, replace the bushings and all the seals. That's how I did it. All those parts are $25 from Morris4x4. This is as far as you can take it down without using specialty tools.

See the problem is I never saw this thing run before. So I dont know it looks good. I do have one bearing race thats a little iffy but the gears, etc. look great. I just dont know what to do.

If the bearing looks bad then you should probably change it out. The gears on the D300 always look good unless they are rust pitted. These are pretty bullet proof transfer cases. A full rebuild kit will run you $140 or you can just do a refresh for $25. Post pictures of the suspect parts if you want other opinions.

I apologize its hard to see. The race has a few vertical wear lines. On the bearing thats not pitting its sand and nasty ness. I knocked over a bucket of blasting sand and some landed in my open d300 WTF! . Anyway I have most of it out of the case. Just haven't gotten to this bearing with the solvent yet.
