Home garage air compressor help
Sorry this is not directly related to my Cj build but it does play a large part. I need a little help on my air compressor purchase. These are in my budget but I can not decide which is better. Seems that the Husky Pro has better reviews. Any help is appreciated.

I have the 33 gal Craftsman, and it's great, not too loud, the only time I've had a problem with it is when I was using my cut-off tool, for everything else it's perfect.

I have a 5hp100 gal tank, but i also have a Dewalt 30 gal 110 compressor that use a lot because it's portable, it's direct drive and oil less, 200 psi, built in regulator, fairly quite, and decent recovery. I think I paid 300-350 a couple of years ago, but it was the only one of that size that would keep up with my framing nailer

Whatever you do don't buy an oil less compressor. Save a little extra and get this one, Campbell Hausfeld 60 Gallon Cast Iron Air Compressor - 3310006 | Tractor Supply Company

I've been very happy with my Husky, had it for about 7 years and it gets used almost every day.. It's plugged into a 20amp panel and it will trip the breaker once in a while on start up when its really cold in the shop.. I need to convert it to 240v, it is a dual voltage motor which is pretty handy..

What is perferred, oiled or oiless motor and does the difference between the HP on the motors (2HP vs 1.6HP) mean much.

I need the compressor to be portable so the 60 gallon is probably not an option and I do not have a 220 outlet in my garage. Husky actually has a 60 gallon 220v for $399.00 like the Campbell Hausfeld compressor. When I googled air compressor reviews I found that the Husky is actually made buy Campbell Hausfeld but sold at home depot under the Husky Pro name.

I just went through this myself. You really need to decide what you want the compressor to do , then purchase accordingly. Don't skimp on this tool. I was lucky enough to be able to over purchase and went for a 5 hp 80 gal Ingersol Rand. It's done everything from air gun to cut off wheel to D/A sander with out a single problem. I too have heard not to go with the oilless, but I don't remember why. So If those two were my only options, I'd take the Huskey.
FYI, Wiring a 220 outlet isn't that bad of a job. |

I think I could handle wiring a 220 outlet, but portability is a big issue. This is the other option if I go with the 220v. it is only $20 more than the 30 gallon 110v in the store. I wonder if I could put some wheels on it?

Ok, I see that the forum has spoke :+). I will rethink this...... but my choices are now the 30 gallon husky or the 60 gallon 220v. I am trying to keep the price below $400.00 so it will be tight.

Most problems with the oil less style compressors are that THEY ARE NOISEY. GAWD AWFUL NOISEY. As in WHAM, WHAM, WHAM... NOISEY. I know that the Craftsman one I bought (and is now in my son's garage) is LOUD.
As was replied, you really need to determine the biggest air hog tool that you will be using on a continuous basis. Impacts, air nailers, etc. don't use a bunch of air. So oil less compressors will work fine. Grinders, cutoff wheels, sanders, polishers, .etc use a bunch of air. So you need to go BIG, or put up with the 'work/wait, work/wait' routine as the compressor tries to keep up. Sandblasters will use everything you've got and more. I've got a 7.5 hp 24cfm @ 90psi, 80gal IR: ![]() My sandblast cabinet will cause it to cycle continuously: ![]() IMO, you can go two ways: Inexpensive and live with the limitations. Or spend the money, and upgrade to a 5+ hp, 60-80 gal tank, 220v unit, and never have to upgrade again. Trust me, mine is going on the truck with me if/when I ever move. At the very least (110v), I would recommend something along this line: FREE SHIPPING — Ingersoll Rand Garage Mate — 2 HP, 5.5 CFM, Model# P1.5IU-A9 | 2 - 9 CFM | Northern Tool + Equipment This style is available from a variety of mfg's.
