Holley 2 BBL Tuning
I know theres alot on this but I need direct help! Jeephammer will probably chime in since he was a holley tech. I have rebuilt my carb with Holleys rebuild kit and put everything back the way it was. I have the carb back on and torqued down. It starts but it idles HIGH, I mean HIGH, like 3500RPM. I checked the linkage and set the float needle so the gas is right at the peep hole. BOTH the idle screws have been turned out 1.5 and I have tried .5, 1, and 2 but still idles high. I think the last thing was the Curb idle screw, I cannot find where to start the needle (though it looks like it pushes the throttle open when you screw it in.
It was working before the rebuild so I dont think there is a vacuum leak. I also only have 2 hoses, one in the back that goes to the top of the valve cover, and one in the front sticking out on the side that goes to the distributor. I know there is also another one right near the front one, but tucked away under the carb, this one was/is blocked off. And the port vacuum on top of the idle screw on the passenger side. I only have the first two vacuums which worked fine previously. Does anyone know what my problem is? I also need a vacuum gauge but I want to get it to at least run. I followed this thread http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f8/holley-2bbl-593073/?highlight=holley+curb+idle

Have been playing with the carb the whole day today, I didnt know it was going to stump me like this. I have tuned little R/C engines plenty of times but not these :/
anyway, it still idles at at 4000RPM and when I give it a blip of gas it goes even higher and wont fall back down. It is actually so high that I have to turn it off just to feel at ease. One time when I gave it a blip it started to die, then POP, a very loud one. I should also mention that there is alot of smoke from the exhaust when started. Its blue and black at different times since I was messing with the curb idle. I also just noticed my power valve shows a different number, bigger one. Ive been looking at the holley tuning video on their site and I guess that could be my problem?? Also can check my float spring, is that correct? and my linkage, how does that look? I think Im missing a spring on the last one, there is an arm on there that doesnt seem to serve a purpose without a spring. ![]() ![]() Last edited by shok47; 07-08-2009 at 08:48 PM.. |

4K RPM??
Is something holding the thottle plates open? With the engine off, open the choke and look down the carb throat and ensure the plates are closing completely if the idle speed screw is backed off. Find what is holding them open. At that speed, something is...Dave |

When I look down I can see a gap the width of a credit card, maybe a little less. After moving the curb idle screw out, I can move the throttle about 1/2" to close. Here are pics showing it. I will try a stronger spring as well like jeephammer had mentioned. Could the bigger power valve cause this idle issue to?

I'd have to say a mad vacuum leak. You'd have to use an adapter to run the Holley 2300 on the factory intake manifold, so make sure that everything is tight and there are no leaks. If it's idling that high you can probably feel where the vacuum leak is sucking the air in.

Im going to guess its where the platform meets the manifold. I only used copper RTV that was skinny. I will have to take it off and check. Will the vacuum gauge help tell whether I have a leak?
Does anyone know what gasket I need for the amc 258 i6 manifold to holley carb platform? Last edited by shok47; 07-09-2009 at 03:31 PM.. |

checked it out tonight, the spring that returns it to close throttle really helped. Double or strong spring is really needed. Its idling nice now, I have the idles 1 turn out and the float is right at the eldge of the hole. But when I give it a quick snap of gas it will bog Whats that mean?

Running On Empty...

Get a proper throttle return spring set, they have them at EVER parts store that carries Mr.Gasket.
Move the throttle spring up to the large open 'Eye' on the linkage so the springs have proper leverage on the throttle shafts. -------------------------------- It means your accelerator pump isn't delivering enough fuel when you 'Snap' the throttle. Adjust the linkage to the accelerator pump, Once the linkage is correct, Then start using larger 'Shooters' until the bog goes away even when you are launching from a dead stop.

Hey man, I have a similar problem to yours, I have the same carb as yours on my 1979 CJ7 but I have my idle at a perfect setting but when i put it into first gear it starts to go but gets to about 10mph and then it feels like it wants to die as if its not getting enough fuel or too much fuel idk. The thing is, i'm having trouble tuning it and want to know what you guys might think the problem could be.
Thanks |
