I got a few Hinkle's jeep stories myself. I moved up into that area in late 1974. I came up here to go to school but my Dad owned a small Cattle farm up about 5 miles from Hinkles. Hinkles site is now the County Emergency response yard among other things. Right next to the Sale Barn/Jockey lot (which Larry also once owned a portion of I think? Along with some fish ponds there. And even a railroad tie business or part of?). Anyway I digress...
I was riding along one of the nearby back roads one day when a couple guys in a rental car flagged me down. Trying to find Hinkles. They were from Michigan. They had missed a turn and gotten lost but were within a mile of the place. You gotta realize that Hinkles was out in the middle of no where from a small town at that! No one would have expected it I don't think but he was indeed the largest simply because he was about the ONLY dealer that had just a Jeep line. The rest of them had to carry the whole line but he had somehow negotiated to just sell jeeps. And so the length of his contract was not saddled with AMC cars and the overhead of carrying that line. Well... these guys would come from all over to buy at a lower cost. These couple had flown in simply to buy two Jeeps and drive them back home. They said that they still saved a considerable amount even with the flight and overall trip costs enough to do it. And people did this all the time. It was common for people to travel from all over the country and buy from Larry and drive them home or even ship them home. It was that big. Us people around here simply didn't realize how big it really was. We went by there every day and it was just a wide spot in the road. just down the road from Buddy's Chain saw (another story). I believe that Larry gave it up when his contract finally ran out and he was going to be forced to either quit or carry the rest of the lines. And so he chose not too. And it came to an end.
I also fondly recall parties up at his old homestead house way back up past Jumping off rock in Sunset off of Highway 11. Another set of stories there!
Never been to Ironman. About time I guess I got off my butt and went.

Somebody should really do a book or documentary on him while he's still with us.
I read (or heard) somewhere that the largest shipment he ever got was 18 car haulers full on one day! Also I think he quit when Chrysler bought out AMC. He stopped selling around 1986 or so. I don't think he really liked Chrysler all that much. Who knows...it was prolly the thing again where they make you sell all their other junk cars and not what you want.
There is no telling what he has stashed away in a warehouse someplace!
