hill billy sr4 to T18 conversion kit

so i have a 4.2 I6 and switched tranny's from a sr4 to a t18 and the input shaft is different so i bored the pilot bearing a little and now the smooth part of the input shaft is too long. can i just cut that to length? all opinions welcome and appreciated

You can cut it if you want as there is no fore/aft force but why did you not buy a new pilot bushing to match the shaft?

Which inout shaft have you got? I take it this box did not come out of a CJ?

i got it off a cj in a self service junkyard but it took every last cent i have till payday and so im trying to be cheap about it

According to Novak's knowledge base the Jeep CJ T18 input shaft (7.43") is shorter than the SR4's shaft (7.50) and a Ford is even shorter at 6.50".. Are you sure it is a CJ T18? or do you have something else going on there.

im pretty sure its an 18 or 19. it has borg warner stamped on the side and has a 6 bolt pattern holding the top plate on the gear housing and the shifter is not offset from the housing, it sits right ontop of the housing. and it is approximatly 1" longer than the old one

or i guess it could be a T98 seeing as they have the same top cover

Do you know what year CJ you got it out of? If it is a pre-1976 t18 out of a jeep there is an adapter plate in between tranny and bellhousing, this could be where you are seeing the extra length.

I thought they only used the adaptor or longer, deeper bellhousing on non CJ apps. Interesting read on one place with info for the T98 is that the T98 was never mated from the factory to a AMC engine. Not sure if this is true or not.

One thought where is reverse? to the right and up? to the right and down? or to the left and up?. To the left and up most likely a T98.

I know full size jeeps used an adapter and those trannys are not good for conversions in a CJ due to different length in bellhousing and input shaft. But according to Novak, t18's in pre '76 CJs used an adaptor plate. If OP didn't get this plate when he pulled the 18 maybe that is where the extra length is coming from. Other than that you are correct that the t18 from a later year, which are the more common ones should if anything be slightly shorter and you can use a different pilot bushing that is bigger and sits further away from the crank.

ok it is a later model 18. reverse is left and down by 4th gear. and i cut about 1.5 cm off the shaft and the bar that bolts to the crossmember had to be cut because it hit the exhaust. btu it is now on...l but i have to drop it again because the shifter wont go on with it bolted up
