I put on an msd igniton. On my third plug gap setting, which has eliminated the pinging during acceleration throughout the gears.

and the last post. Looked like a bunch of mumbo jumbo about vacuum settings and yadda yadda? Really? Vacuum settings?

Sorry bro, cant do it. CRT's and dizzy machines and air to fuel ratios....

Not sure where you're at on this but I have MSD ignition with flamethrower coil. .048 gap works pretty good. .050+ pings when accelerating through the gears. Take it or leave it.

True.
My compression numbers were all 170 except #1 cylinder, which was 160.

Checked out the distributor per 86's recommendations and found I have no weights/ springs to check out and a small amount of side to side play in the shaft.

I don't know if it is visible/ audible in the vid, but here it is.



My Haynes manual states that any discernible play requires dizzy replacement....

Yes any play side to side I replaced the distributor.

Hi 2x, it's been a while.

What makes you think you have "no weights/springs"? You have to dig a little further into the distributer to find them.

Did you ever check the advance curve like we discussed weeks ago?

You are correct.
I didn't dig any farther into it than pulling the cap/ rotor and checking for play.

When I got to that point I pulled out my Haynes manual for some direction.
I saw no mention of weights/ springs in the text or diagrams.....
(I KNEW I should have grabbed the manual on the way out the door this morning...!)

Never did the curve, because every time I turned around another gremlin reared it's ugly head.... hence the 55 pages of posts....

I've suspected all along that your distributer was part of the cause of the original pinging problem. A broken/worn out spring, or weights that are sticking from corrosion could well be the problem...at least in my feeble mind.

A simple centrifugal advance test would confirm. Just disconnect the vacuum advance at the canister and plug the hose. Then run the engine up to about 2500-3000 RPM and check the timing. It should read above 20 BTDC at that RPM.

The distributer isn't difficult to pull apart, but it takes patience working with some pretty tiny parts. Here's a few pics to give you an idea of what you'd be getting into.

ahhh...... so the wights are UNDER the pick up plate.

But, as 86 pointed out, I DO have some play in the shaft.
So that may be a moot point.

Even if it only occurs under load?

It revs fine when parked.....
