But you cant hear a leak from #1 to #2 just #2 to #1?

If I didn't know anything else I would say the problems are;
#1 Rings
#2 Head Gasket
#3 Rings
#4 Rings and exhaust valve
#5 Intake Valve
#6 Exhaust valve.

Not that I noticed. It was VERY evident from #2 to #1...

So, provided I did the test correctly, this engine is shot.....

But again, with 100% leakage how do I get 170 compression numbers?

It's all-together possible that you messed up on the test so I wouldn't worry about 100% leak-down. The orifice calibrations can mess with your head; especially if it's your first time doing it.

Bleeding air from adjacent cylinders and through the valves, however, is quite telling. Any competent machine shops around you that can build the engine?

Might be time for dinner and a movie, "just because I love you"

My brother had a 440 mopar that ran 10:20's and it had enough blowby to lift the valley pan up into the intake if he didn't have both valve covers vented.

Only other way would be to pull your valve cover to ensure both valves are closed for each cylinder test.

It may just be time for a moment of silence for said motor and hit the do over button with your spare engine.

"The one that really seems odd (to me anyway)is #2 leaking into #1 cylinder"

Time to pull the head, as you have lost the headgasket.

So I think my plan is to redo the leak down test with the VC off.

If that indeed indicates a shot head gasket, I'll replace it in hopes of getting enough time out of my current motor to replace it with something better - either by rebuilding my spare motor or swapping in a 304.

Sound reasonable?

To me your compression was too even. Though WOT may be different.
