Well I bought it last night!!! Did a frame and under body inspection and couldnt be happier. On top of it having all new seats front and back, it has a like new Whitco original blue soft top and hardware! Will do up full write up and pics when I get back from work in a couple weeks. Its gonna be a great Christmas... Thanks again for your posts!
Finally got around to picking up my 81 CJ5 last night. Had a buddy drive me in to pick it up. PO was clueless on how to put soft top on, since he put in on once in 6 years. About 20 minutes later I had the Whitco blue soft top on her, nice and snug. Heater worked ok, but 4 hours in near zero temps in a soft top CJ5 doesn't do much. My water bottle was on floorboard and when I pulled into Seward it was all but frozen. Roads were crap so I drove slow, kept it in 2H and was in 3rd and 4th gear on way home. She did drive like new though for a 31 year old Jeep, everything was nice and tight, no issues, noises or funny smells..... What it needs more than anything is a good wash, and fluids change and new belts. Froze my tail off and got honked at a few times for driving slow but had a big grin on my face the whole trip back! Do a full wite up on findings w/ pics when I get around to it after holidays. Happy Holidays, thanks for you guys' advice. I couldn't be happy with it! That Whitco factory top it the cat's A$$!!!
You had better not divulge who/where is selling this Jeep because it would be as good as gone! Do not pass GO, head IMMEDIATELY to buy this Jeep. After shopping eBay for a couple years (and still reconnoiter daily for CJ5s) before settling on my '81 CJ5, I can assure you this one would likely fetch in the $8,000.00 - $9,000.00 if it were up for eBay auction.
I paid 8 for my 81' last month -- but it came with a lot of new stuff on it - from paint to tires to lockers to Warn winch to new top - stearo and a lot more - you get the idea - i still had put another grand in it to really get it dialed in the way i wanted it - Mine has 46K actual on it - so 45 I say yeah - you have a great base jeep to start with & drive while your modding it.
Ive been swamped here at work and driving back to see my kids. I got it in the garage and haven't had time to do anything to it... I'll post more and pics when I get around to it. Have a good one guys.
Looks like to me you found a very nice CJ - Good ones are getting harder to come by everyday - Like I said I paid 8 grand for mine but this morning I added up all the receipts for goodies that's been added to mine and without labor just the parts came up to over 7 grand - it gets pricey restoring anything any more - a guy is better off buying a nice one like you did from the get go & then you can figure out just how far you want to take it - My wife ask me last night why I didn't just go buy a new one - I told her I couldn't buy a new CJ anymore & that's the body style I like - I think the last new CJ I bought I paid 12K and change - boy have thing's changed - tom
