help with 4.0 head swap!!
i know, i know, do a search. believe me this will be my first question after 3 weeks of endless nights of reading. i will be doing the 4.0 head swap along with the chevy TBI swap. i have read almost every article and page on these swaps. i feel as if i know "bill usa" from all his helpful threads (thanks by the way) i have gathered almost everything i need accept the head bolt washers, which i need for my 7/16 bolts in the the 4.0 head with 1/2 bolts. everything i read says tap them (not a option) or get the washers from clifford performance. i checked there website and can't find them. now i noticed all the threads that mentioned these washers go a couple years back, did they not work out, were people having problems with them, that they stopped selling them.
my question is what do i use, if they don't sell them. does anyone have pics of them, i have access to a lathe and can make them myself, i mean there just a spacer, maybe a little hi temp silicone in between them.
thanks ahead for any help
p.s. bill can i use the "v8" 1227747 computer, with the wrong numbered ecu's v6 chip from a 1990 chevy 1500 v6. i figured i would just try the wrong ecu first and see what happens, all the conversion parts are off this same truck ($50)

Get them from Summit as posted, or from Jegs, other local speed shops might have them. Ask for Ford centering washers. When you get them from Clifford, you get 4 for $20. When you buy them from a speed shop, you get a set of 20 for about $35. Use what you need, sell or give away the rest.

It's just a Jeep, and if you don't wheel it once in a while, it's not even that.

Speaking of 4.0 head swap, I have a 4.2 258 with the Howell kit. I would like to put the 4.0 head on my motor before i install it. I heard there is some special part number to use for the 4.0 head? This sounds like a lot of work to put this head on, is it worth it? What do i get out of it? Thank you Brent.

I think you mean the casting number. Casting 7120 is the preferred head followed by 0630. The 0630 head does not have the threaded port for the temp sensor but a machine shop can drill and tap it. Not a lot of work, pretty minimal considering the performance gain you get. The hardest part is plugging the coolant ports. Most have used epoxy. I've also seen the passages drilled and tapped and then a countersunk screw was screwed in then decked flat. I had the passages milled for a flat freeze plug. Welding is preferred, but there are other route that can be done for a lot less coin.
BTW, that avatar is funny as hell.

On all the blocks I've ever seen, you don't need to fill the ports, they don't overlap at all.

I am working on a parts list now, i probably won't take many pics, there are just so many good threads with pics now. But i am making a detailed parts list with pricing, i plan on starting the swap monday, go wheeling this weekend before it gets torn down, i know its going to be down for a while. from all the stories i have read on the tbi swap, i am expecting the worst, i have all junkyard parts. i just want it to start and stay running, so i can then deal with tuning and chips. then i will be happy!

To be honest, I didn't check for overlap but I know they are right on the edge if you are using certain year AMC blocks. IIRC, the DMC blocks have a little more meat in that area. But that being said, better safe than sorry. How pissed would you be to finish a rebuild only to find it leaked? Or how about if it started leaking on some trail in the middle of nowhere? No thanks. Considering it only took about 90 minutes to mill the head and install flat plugs it was well worth it.

just wanted to finish this and say i finished the 4.0 head swap, relatively easy. didn't do the FI though, just sold the jeep, so thats that. but the head made a really big difference, much more power and torque, less stalling. +1 on this swap, if anyone has any ?'s let me know

what push rods and rockers did you use? Ive heard a lot of conflicting information. where the rockers centered on the top of the push rods once it was all back together?

I just completed the same. I used the 258 push rods and the 4.0 rockers. The pinging I had with the Mopar MPI on premium seems to be gone. Haven't tried regular gas yet.
