Don't know if this will be any help...

The 304 is exactly the same outside dimensions as the AMC 360 and 401. If you want to change engines, the AMC 360 engines still grow on trees and will be a good power upgrade without changing the look and keeping your Jeep all 'Jeep'...

'77 304 will have a Prestolite Ignition system.
Not really reliable, and virtually nothing from the aftermarket will work on your Prestolite ignition.
Prestolite was used from '74 to '77 in CJ vehicles, '75 to '77 in Full Size Jeeps (FSJ) if you need parts.
Module will be on the passenger side front fender, Square 4 wire connector and a single black 'Ground' wire coming out of it.
The distributor is unique since it used a PLASTIC vacuum advance, very hard to miss... (And a HUGE failure point!)

It will have a (Ford) Motorcraft Alternator with external voltage regulator, External voltage regulator will be found on the passenger side fender, flat 4 wire terminal connection.

It will have a Motorcraft 2100 Carb,
The MC 2100, 2 Barrel carb is a durable unit that works fairly well in off road situations.
Parts, rebuild kits and replacment carbs are still available, although they are getting expensive.

It will have a Dana 30 Front end,
Jeep CJs use Dana 30 front ends from around '71 through production end of CJs in '86.
You will have NARROW TRACK axles (CJ-7s from '76 to '81),

It WILL NOT have front 'Lock Outs' on the ends of the axles, it will have 'Drive Flanges' since the transfer case is a 'Full Time' unit.

It will have 6 bolt brake caliper brackets, and it will have 1-1/8" thick rotors.

It will have a GM TH 400 Transmission with AMC engine side bolt pattern.

It will have a Borg Warner 1305/1339 Transfer Case,
(1305 won't have a 'Low' range box attached/
1339 WILL have a low range box attached, with High/Low shifter under the front right corner of the drivers seat)

It will have an OFF SET AMC 20 Rear Differential (perfectly round/domed cover, off set to the Passenger Side instead of centered under the vehicle),

It will share most components from '76 to '86 Jeeps, including suspension components, body parts, ect.

If you are going with complete restore,
I suggest you do the axles first, so you have a 'Rolling Chassis',
Then I would lift the body, finish out the frame and drive train where everything is exposed and easy to get at,

Then I would worry about body, wiring, and lastly, interior. (In that order)

Does this help any?

REMEMBER,
'Free' internet information is worth EXACTLY what you paid for it!

Kind of sounds like he's looking for parts? Try the forum classifieds, ebay, craigslist, kijiji.
