Hello there and question

Hello there, my name is Paul and I'm the proud owner of a rusty 1986 CJ7 jeep. I noticed there is no radiator overflow bottle. Where does it go? What is a great place to find jeep parts? This is a big work in progress as this jeep is very rusty and very well used. Thanks in advance.

Paul

Hi Paul,
Welcome to the Jeep Forum.

The radiator overflow bottle is mounted on the inside of the drivers side fender right next to the windshield washer fluid bottle. The clean white one as compared to the dull yellow windshield washer bottle on the right in the picture.

Lots of good places to buy Jeep parts but Morris4x4 was always the first place I started looking when I was rebuilding my Jeep.

Any local auto parts store sells a universal radiator overflow tank. They come with the mounting bracket, and hoses to install it. The only shipping charges are your time and gas to go get one. Can usually be purchased for less than $15...

Ok, I went back to the garage and I can't even find mounting brackets for where this thing even goes. This is what it looks like underneath my hood.

The brackets are on the over flow bottle, all you need is 4 holes in the fender. Two of them are shared with the wiper washer bottle.

Here, I found better pictures.

The hose from the radiator goes into the small port next to the cap and should be ran to the bottom of the tank.

I ordered the overflow bottle but I the hole isn't big enough for me to slip the hose through? Do I need to ream it out? I notice in your picture, you have no hose running from radiator to the coolant reservoir.

That was taken right after install and before the hose was ran. Yes, I had to slightly ream out the hole to get the hose in and ran to the bottom of the tank.

I'm not sure when AMC started including an overflow tank on the 258, but I know my '81 has never had one, and I've never needed one.

Just FYI.

I believe it was in 1982. Mainly as an EPA tool to keep antifreeze from running out on the ground. Coolant expands and contracts by 7%. With no overflow the level always looks an inch or two low after the engine has cooled off. With the overflow tank it will stay full to the brim.

My '82 FSM clearly shows the 258 without an overflow. The V8 shows one, but not the 258.

My coolant stays right at the top of the fins, and I've never had any leakage out of the overflow tube. This applies to both my 258 and 360.

My washer bottle is on the other side on the firewall and is factory on the 83. Its RHD so it sits under the brake booster. Battery is above the charcoal canister and the radiator overflow

My 81 has one, for reference. Sorry to screw up the paradigm :-/
