I also tried turning the dizzy slightly either way hoping to find a spot close enough to stock timing to make it start but nada. I am 96% sure that I was TDC on the compression stoke when I installed the dizzy.

It's tried to start a couples times now, it just hasn't started fully. I think I know the general area the dizzy needs to be in but I am killing my batt and starter.

Well it looks like I tried to start too many times and fried my solenoid.

Why don't you check your timing, find top dead center on #1 and go from there it could be off.....

2 things...there are 2 TDC's and a little adjustment on a HEI goes a long way. Another thing, make sure you have a bronze gear not a STEEL one. THe Steel one will eat your camshaft gear. Mine I bought from 4WD and it came with a steel gear and nobody warned me, now I need to rebuild the engine.

Crap I never heard that about the steel gear, I am pretty sure the one I bought was steel. Just got a new noid and am reconfirming that the engine was at TDC on compression stroke when I installed it. I already pulled the plugs and my #5 and #3 have zero black residue on them, just gas. The others look like they were the ones that fired when I was turning it over. weird

Timing problem.....
I just installed a hei dizzy and have been trying to get it to work all day. After some tips from other members I back tracked and checked timing again. After 30 mins with my wife's finger in the cyl #1 spark plug hole I realized a big problem. When i look through the plug hole in cyl number one and the piston is at TDC the TDC marking on the vibration damper is no where near the engine TDC marking... I have never taken a damper off but imagine that there wouldn't be more that one way for it to go on but I guess not. Has anyone ever heard of this before? What is needed to get the damper off?

OK, after cooling down I see there are three bolts on that damper so there is three possible positions it could be in, apparently whoever put this engine together picked one of the two available wrong ways. My cheap daily driver has turned into a money and time black hole

you are on the exhaust stroke not the compression stroke, rotate your engine some more and you will be at the TDC on the compression stroke.

you need to be on the compresion stroke of number 1..The piston can be at tdc on the exhaust stroke that will leed you to beleive the ballancer is on wrong..Its keyed so it cant be..Pull the n.1 plug, take cap off dizzy, put finger on hole..Have wife bump the key so the rotor only goes about 1 inch at a time..When your finger gets poped off the hole your on the compression stroke..Rotate by hand the engine till timing marks line up..it may take a few times to get your timing down of the key bumps, but take notice of where the n.1 plug tower is on the cap ''thats why I say to take it off'' so you can anticipate the compression stroke of n.1 cylinder as the rotor makes its way around to the n.1 spot..

Your looking at the bolts that hold the pulley. The dampner is keyed to the crank shaft. Pull the number one plug, put a coat hanger in the hole and rotate the engine to bring the piston to the top. Look at the timing mark, if you don't see it make another revolution. You should see it line up with the timing mark. Install the distributor with the rotor pointing at the number one plug wire. Then check firing order. It should start after this.

OK, my wife and I rotated it a few more times, and the timing mark on the damper does not match up with the timing mark on the engine. They are way off. And whether it is on compression or exhaust(that only make a difference for spark and valves) the piston should be at the top of the cylinder when the mark on the damper and engine align. When the piston is at TDC (looking through the plug hole) the mark on the damper is no where neat the engine mark. What gives?

what side of the jeep is the timing tab on?..
If it was a rubber lined ballancer like a chevy,I would say the ballancer spun on the snout..Woodruff keys do break..though unlikely they do.. If you line up the timing mark where the piston in the cylinder?..
