HEI Distributor

I have a 1980 CJ7 with the 258 carbureted engine. I was wondering if anyone has run an HEI distributor on a setup similar to this, and what the results were? I was also curious as to the California smog legality of such a move. If anyone has any info that would great!

yup..

All 3 of my Cj's are running with the HEI setup currently. My 79 with the 258 is using a DUI unit (brand of HEI), but my others with the junkyard swap HEI performed just as well.
Sorry but I don't know anything about Cali. smog regulations, we don't have to worry about that here in Michigan.
Good luck.

I have an HEI on mine (Performance Distributors DUI) and I love it, however it would never make inspection in Ca.!

Sadly the cutoff is 1975. They may up that date in the future, but all of the talks I here right now are that they want to drop it...

As to the junkyard sway, what rig do you find the HEI in that will fit this model?

I have an 81 and from all the research I've done my butt says, I mean in my opinion, you'd be better off with the team rush upgrade, from researching it looks like it is superior in many ways to the GM swap. I've been a SB Chevy guy for a long time.
Just before movin to AZ. I sold a 34 ford tudor I built from the ground up starting with a 64 327 I build up on an engine stand then shoped around for a chassis to put it in, ended up with a brand new 34 repop chassis mustang II ford 8" rear TH350 etc. etc. etc. Hand made solid brass dashboard inserts. and a whole lotta other work.
Any way if you research it you might find the conversion on the stock dist. system will be your best bet for many reasons.

Check this out and don't forget to "HAVE FUN" while doin it.

I don't know about El Dorado county, but here in Tuolumne county we only smog when the vehicle is sold (you should get a P.O. box down here..). An HEI setup is legal in California, it allows for a hotter spark thus more complete combustion thus less emissions. I have an HEI on my V8 with 60,000 miles on it and no gear problems (after inspection) or any problems for that matter. It is a subject of much debate around here.
