could it be the heater core?

Yes, if the heater core has ruptured, you should smell the antifreeze when the blower is on, and/or is the greenish water dripping either out of the bottom of the heater box onto the floorboard or through the small drain hose located on the firewall under the battery tray. If it is the core, you will need to remove the heater box assembly to replace it.
