Head gasket failure - causes?

I stumbled on a truck with a 401 in it. It runs but a head gasket is blown. I can change the head gaskets for about $135. What I am concerned with is what would cause the head gasket to go. If I buy it is there something to look for?

Extreme overheating can warp a head. Putting a new gasket on it will probably not work if that's the case.

The head will have to be trued and possibly the block decked.

If you remove the heads due to a blown gasket, you should have them inspected for cracks, and if none found, you should have them resurfaced.

The truck probably overheated!

cross your fingers it's a gasket and not a cracked head.
