have a carter 2bl on my I258 need replacement!

I have an 81 Cj5 with the AMC 258 and i have and idle problem and my mechanic buddy says i need to rebuild or replace the carb. So what i'm saying is i need to replace it and i was just wondering what everyone has to offer in opinions. I kind of want to stay with Double Barrel so suggested ideas???

You can get the kit on ebay its like 300 some but he includes everything, or you can go to a junkyard find an 80's ford with a 302 pull the carb, rebuild it get the adapter from autozone, and fab a throttle cable support. The later would probably be cheaper if you don't count your time as money.

Bojon-
Are they 1.08's and is there much play In the throttle shafts?
If they're good to go I may want one. I kinda broke an ear off mine and have it held together with jbweld. What would you want for one?

Yeah, they are 1.08's, and the throttle shafts feel tight. I'm looking for $50 plus shipping, I know it seems a little high, but I can drive 20 minutes down the road and get the same for them. I'd rather see someone on the forum get them though.

I might be the only person still happy with my Carter, I clean the feeder tubes maybe once a year... 165,000, still going. Perhaps you've already tried this? Good Luck!

Tripster-
The idle tubes on the Carter have holes that are known for clogging, and cause fuel to "drip" from them causing the poor idle issue. Sadly, most mechanics don't know this and recommend replacement or rebuild, when in actuality it's a 10 minute fix that doesn't require removal of the carb.
I highly recommend checking out the link that EveryDayCJ posted to see if that's your problem.

You can have the tubes drilled out which will lessen the chance of them clogging again.

The Motorcraft 2100/2150 is a very popular upgrade. If I ever needed to replace my Carter I'd personally go that route.

I just bit the bullet and bought the $300 kit off ebay. brand new mc2100, manual choke and the filter kit. I was tired of messing with the carter and if the mpg gains are as good as he says they are I will be happy. i'll let you know how it goes as soon as I get it and install it.

Ill let you know if I want one, a salvage yard here will make you pay at least 50 so not a bad price. I may have one back home now off a 304 but im not sure quite yet.
