Hard top identification help

Can anyone tell me the model years this CJ5 hard top will fit?

The seller is uncertain and this is too far for me to drive just to see if it fits.

It won't fit your jeep with the upper door hinge that high. 1975 and down to ?

I remember seeing a new white metal hardtop installed on a new '78 CJ5 at
a dealership. I think it was a Kelly top. The windshield hold down knobs were
loosened and the windshield had to be tilted forward and shimmed to meet
the edge of the front of the hardtop. I think the tabs for the windshield hold
down knobs were bent down and the knobs re-installed.

Otherwise the top of the hardtop would have overhung the windshield.

I think the hardtop was designed for older model CJ5s ( '55-'75 ) or maybe
the hardtop manufacturer decided to keep the old style top and tilt the
windshield to make the top fit properly on the '76-'83 CJ5s.

AMC/Jeep changed a few things an the CJ5 in '76 including the windshield
rake/tilt. The windshield tilts farther back on '76 and newer CJ5s than the '75
and earlier models.

The door in your photo looks like it has a good amount of rake ( tilted back )
on the front upper edge by the top hinge.

Maybe someone else on the forum can help out. Good luck with it!

that is a Meyer Steel Cab, for Jeeps prior to 1970, still on the Kaiser Jeep Brand, before AMC picked up Jeep from Kaiser. It will not fit any Jeep after the AMC take over--thus, the 1971 model year onward.

Jeep changed in 1971-72 and they were killer cool thereafter.

I have had 3 of those tops over the years and they were great, save for the weight. But, they were solid and did not leak.

Hope that is helpful.

That's not correct. The Orville/Meyers hardtop used a bracket that mounts to the windshield for the upper hinge. I have an identical one to this for a 76-83 CJ5. From the angle of the top of the door (slope of the windshield) I'm guess that's what this one fits as well. Make sure the upper hinge brackets are included however, as they are impossible to find.

I am correct. They were made by the Meyers Snow Plow Company, originally. Call the company as they still make snow plow equipment.

I'm not going to argue with you. I own one. It's sitting in my garage. The label is still firmly affixed which says made by Orrville Specialty Products and "Official Jeep Special Equipment." I personally removed it from my 1978 CJ5.

Let the readers decide whom to believe.

Meyers and Orville seemed to use the same print to make tops for Jeeps
I think one owns the other somehow...

Some picture from our CJ5 hardtop reference library
