Half Doors w/ Hard Uppers

I have an 86 CJ that I purchased as a POS. I rebuilt from the ground up to a really nice rig (A bit of a driveway queen). I also bought some lower half doors and a hard top. The part I was missing was the upper doors, until recently. The fiberglass upper doors seem to fit, but I have no way of attaching them to the lower doors.

The uppers came with long bolts, but they simply enter a "blind" hole in the lower doors. There are no threads in the lowers.

Has anybody had this delema? Is there a solution? I am assuming I will have to weld in some nuts. Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Dave

Are the half doors (lower) metal factory doors from a Wrangler?
Next, do they have the 3 plastic hole guides for the uppers? Most of the time these are missing or break.
Do the upper sections have the squared upper corners or the rounded corners to match the hardtop?

The lower doors are metal and I am assuming they are from a Wrangler. On that point I cannot be certain.
They do have the 3 plastic inserts per door. None seem to be broken. Will these doors only work with "Soft Uppers"?

The "Hard Uppers" have round corners to mate up to the hard top. Physically everthing goes together, but I can't securly fasten the uppers to the lower doors.

Thank for any help!

Dave

Having never messed with the hard uppers, my guess would be that perhaps you need to remove the interior trim panel from the YJ half doors so that you can access the insides of the doors and put some nuts on the studs.

'86 CJ-7 Laredo: 4.2,T-999,D300,D30/D44,'94 YJ tub, full cage, Shrockworks rockers, OYR corners, AC,cruise, restored seats,3 tops,2.5" Superlift,F-T shackle reversal, RS9000x's,35" Dunlop Mud Rovers.
'83 Scrambler: time & money pit under construction with parts from CJ's,YJ's,TJ's,FSJ's,GM,Ford,IH,Honda,Toyota and a whole lotta aftermarket & custom stuff.

Yeah, that is what I suspected. I have the interior trip panels removed already and trying to decide my next move.

Is this not a common configuration? Do most Jeepers have not have a Hard Top and Hard Uppers? Just curious.

Later,
Dave

Not real common. You had a 9 year run on the YJ, hard uppers are aftermarket and were available for maybe 3-4 years of that production time (obviously they're still made now, but by a lot fewer vendors) and typically cost as much as if not more than a decent set of used full doors.
