Greg"s " Not an actual rebuild" thread

So i have decided to start a thread on my new project. It is a really nice 79 CJ7 that a PO had dumped a lot of money into for his kid, kid didnt get it for what ever reason andit was sold to a person I know then traded to me about 6 months later.

It has a freshly rebuilt 258 with a T-150, Dana 20 and model 20 and Dana 30 axles. 4 inch RC lift, 33 inch allterrains on black steel rims. Warn bumber front and rear with tire carrier. Brand new bestop soft top, Front and rear seats, PSC power steering box, and a DUI distro. new wiring harness.

The body was pulled off and and painted as well as the frame. So with all of that being said it is a really nice driver and I do not want to make it into a hardcore crawler. This is the nicest Cj I have owned, But i do want to make it a little more trail worthy. Plus I cant leave anything alone, I love to tinker and change things.

Here is the plan:
I have a T-18 out of a FSJ with the 6.32 Granny gear. Going to rebuild with a new input shaft and install.

Wide track axles. Gussest the rear and put some spicer unjoints in the front. i am unsure of the gears i currently have. The rear is stamped with the code for 3.54s. It runs great on the highway with the 33's, I am pulling right around 2500 rpms at 65mph. It will run as fast as I dare to push it. So depending on what the gears actually are i plan on reusing them on the new axles. Also an Aussie locker up front and undecided on rear locker

Rebuild the dana 20 and drop in a low gear set.

Remove the bottom spring for the 4 inch lift to lower just a little and see if I can soften the ride. I am hoping I will not have to buy new springs. it is tolarable but not happy with it. I actually pulled the swaybar off and it rides better and the body roll is not bad at all.

Tires, The 33 all terrains are new but I want some MTs, Either BFG KM2s or MTR-Ks.

Lastly drive it and enjoy. I have an 08 Rubicon that I wheel now, but I love driving the CJ.

I have done lots of minor things that were driving me crazy. The shop that originally did the work on the Cj didnt do a lot of the small things. Ie, Carb not tuned, Distro not tuned, gauges not wired properly. All of the markers and turn signals corroded, windshield wipers not working properly, wiring for the stereo unsightly.

I have started this thread at work so my pictures are limited for now, but more to follow... One of the Cj resting in the garage and one of the Jk having fun!

Greg

Talked to partsmike out in Cali yesterday. 200 bucks for the rebuild kit and have a guy here that will rebuild it for 250. For that price I will avoid the headache.

Just waiting to find out if I will need to replace the clutch or use the one thats in it now. Hoping to reuse the one I have, only 2500 miles on it...

Ok, not much progress on the jeep to date. I decided to go back to school on top of working full time and still shooting matches 2 or 3 weekends a month is eating up my time.

I did score a set of wide axles from an 83 today for 200 bucks!! Will go pick them up Saturday. So parts are slowly coming together.

So I haven't done too much to the jeep. But that's about to change! I picked up a set of wide axles of an 84. Also a set of flat fenders and an OME 2.5 inch lift. Started painting the fenders tonight and will get really started on Saturday. Pictures will be coming.

OME 2.5 inch lift is now on. It rides so much better! Now I have to figure out what the noise in the front end is....
Pics to follow.

I have scored another T-18. But this one came out of a 78 Cj7 and still has the Dana 20 attached. Also have the wide tracks stripped, painted and ready for gears.
