Gearshift Sloppy?

CJ7 Troubleshooters -

Need advice on what to do with a (suspected) faulty part. Shifter in T4 tranny can be simply lifted up & handed to the passenger (not good). Attempts at caveman manipulation of metal sleeve have only made situation worse (even more play). Suggestions from the masses? Don't see part readily available in any of the parts catalogs. Help!

There's a plastic sleeve that goes between the stub that sticks up out of the tranny and the metal clip. When the plastic wears out the clip doesn't hold the shifter on there anymore. Get a new plastic thingy and a new metal clip and you should be good to go. It will REALLY make a difference. Only bad part is you have to get the part at the stealership. I still think it was only like $10-15 bucks though.

Parts Found

Yes, parts have been found. Was ordering new sheetmetal & asked if they carry the part. Was in luck. Got the parts at WillysOverland. Apparently a very common problem in jeeps of age & miles. Email me direct if you can't locate the needed parts & I'll get you in contact with who you need.

Same thing happened to me

Shifted into second this afternoon and gearshift came off in my hand. I have a 84 CJ7 with the T4.

Looks like the metal clip is broken, and the "plastic sleeve" had been replaced by the PO with some sticky rubber tape. I don't see these parts at WillysOverland. Anyone got any ideas?

check with your local dealership. That's where I got mine, and the parts weren't very expensive.

another (great) option is to tack weld a nut on two sides over a drilled hole, and use two set screws to hold it in place.

My Jeeps's PO tried the duct tape fix too, with the same results.
