Gears

I am replacing my 2.73's (why did jeep do this???!!!) with 4.56's. wanted to do one axle at a time (rear amc20 1st) dana 30 2nd. I know I can't use 4wd like this, BUT if i leave the transfer case in 2hi and the manual hubs unlocked there's no problem right? A guy at work told me there would be damage to the vehicle but I can't see how. Since my frame isn't ready for wheelin and snow and ice are not an issue in MD this time of year I'd like to do one at a time as i get the cash...

theres nothin wrong with doing it one axle at a time...Just dont ever lock the front end in and put it in 4 H or L. until front and rear match.

With the hubs unlocked, the front diff and axles are stationary.

My 2 cents on this for the way you are going to do this, pull the front drive shaft off until it is complete. Less apt for a mistake with the t-case shifter.

Along these same lines (gear changing!), the AMC 20 requires a new carrier for any ratio above the 2.73. So, will a Detroit locker be a good choice? If not, what are some recommendations? And, does the Dana 30 (front) need a carrier change to go to 4.56?

That's what I did when I changd my gears. Did the rear first and ran them for a month then got off my lazy butt and did the front. Stay out of 4 wheel drive and you got no problems.
