Gear swap

Looking at swapping gears in my 79 cj7. I have narrow track axles with 2.72 gears. If like to go up to 3.54 gears and would prefer to not have to swap carriers out. I've read conflicting comments that say changing a 2.72 to any other ratio requires changing the carrier and that the carrier is fine from. 2.72 to 3.54.

I have a set of wide track axles from an 84 that according to the rear end stamp are 2.72 w trac lock.

Would it be worth using the trac lock rear end/ carrier or not ? Any thoughts? Trying to do this as cheap as I can. If I could pour all the cash I wanted into it I'd go w a selectable locker, but that's out of the money right now.

I have a mpfi 258 w t176 transmission and 33" tires. 33's are as tall as I'd like to go even though I have a good set of 35s sitting in the shop. I think the 35s would be too much tire for the jeep on either gear set.

uh, no. you'll still have the same case and would not be able to install the gearing you need. for 33" tires, i'd be looking at 4.10's with a manual tranny. honestly, i'd keep shopping around for a good set of used axles with the gearing you need. you might even get lucky and find a rear one with a locker already in it. that would be the easiest and, most likely, the least expensive solution, imho.

just to add,
try the 'for sale' forum on this site and others (pirate4x4, etc.), the local jy's, craig's list, ebay, etc.
i found a near new detroit locker on craig's list a few years ago. $75 shipped from Ca to Mn! while scores like that can be few and far between, they do come up.
good luck to you.

the carrier split is at 3.54/3.73 you would be fine to run 3.54 on your carrier. as for the trac lok if it isn't worn out its better than an open diff but not as good as some other options such as an aussie auto locker (around $250). I run 35's with 3.54's and turn about 2900 rpm at 55 mph. I am running a 304/th-400 though. I don't know how much difference there would be with a 258

While this is partially true the front Dana 30 carrier has a break at 3.54 and down is one carrier and 3.73 and up is another carrier. The AMC 20 is much different. there is a 2.73 carrier and a 3.08 and up carrier. Also note that the AMC 20 has 2 different carriers for 3.08 and up one for Trac-Loc and one for open diff.

I would look for a complete set of axles with gears already installed. Narrow Tracs usually have 3.54's in them and you can get them free or cheap if you look around (everybody wants wide tracs). If you're going to regear, regear the widetracs. The tracloc is better than open, but not great. If you're going to go through the trouble and expense of regearing, I'd wait and do it when you can afford some kind of traction device and do that at the same time so you're not paying to do it all twice (your time or in $$$'s, either way you're paying)

I have some n.t. axels with 3.54 gears. Rear is ready to go with new brakes, front was torn down to make transport easier.
