So Monte, are you going to continue using this thread for any news on the Gaucho? Or is there going to be a Gaucho Build thread part II?? Just so I can keep eyeballing it and not miss a thing...

X2. I want to continue to follow the progress. Not trying to rush anything....just letting you know I am still interested in following the progress on this unique rig.

Well, I do plan to keep everyone informed of the build. But I haven't decided if it will continue on this thread or if a new one should be started. I will let everyone know when it is decided.

I think its reasonable to start a new thread if you want to separate your work from jscherb's. Just be sure to post a link to the new thread here if you choose to go that route.

The Gaucho is now on its way to its new home. After meeting the buyer, I've got to say the Gaucho is going to a very good home.

Thanks to everyone for their help and input throughout this build. The Gaucho would not have turned out as nice as it did without your help.

Jeff

New Jersey keeps gettin' all the goods... first Kovalchuk and now this one-of-a-kind Gaucho

Well, at least post a link of the new Gaucho thread so we can follow along. Good luck with her and make us proud!

Just so everyone knows, I started a thread for the continuation of the Gaucho build. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f8/gaucho-part-ii-1079467/#post9876494. It is going to be a little while before I get to do something to it, but I figured I'll throw an intro out there. Please, if anyone has any ideas, let me know. I got a few ideas, but you may have a better one.
Thanks Joe

They're doing a "What's your favorite truck" contest among all the submitted truck photos on their web site. Wouldn't it be cool if the Retro was voted the favorite over all those Chevies, Fords, etc...

Here's the link, if you'd like to vote for the Retro, visit this link, click on "Click here to vote for your favorite customer's truck", and select "Jeff Scherb" from the drop down list: Customers' Trucks Gallery

Hey thanks to everyone that voted, I guess we stuffed the ballot box pretty well, because the Retro had the most votes in the Mar-k "favorite truck" contest. I think I win a t-shirt and a place on their home page: MAR-K Classic Truck Parts made in Oklahoma City, USA

Thanks for the votes!!

It also dries to a very hard finish - it was designed as a coating for machinery and other high-abuse applications.

Here's a preview photo, more photos tomorrow when it's dry and I can roll it out of the garage...

Jeff,

The Gaucho frame turned out great and motivates me enough to paint my CJ7 frame using a foam roller and brush. I saw from previous posts that you first applied a rust converter, then a primer, then a topcoat. What rust converter did you use and was that brushed on also? What primer did you use before applying the Hammerite?

I can't remember which rust converter I used, there are a bunch on the market and they're all more or less the same, but I didn't really even need it, since I sanded most of the rust off. The thing to know about most of those rust converters is that they don't penetrate very deep - try some on a patch of rust, and then sand it - you'll see that below the very top layer that the converter worked on, the rust is still there. I mostly used the rust converter to kill any "flash rust" on the parts that I had sanded to bare metal. I would never use a rust converter product and expect it to take care of anything more than superficial surface rust. In my opinion, the only solution for real rust treatment is mechanical removal (sanding) and metal replacement for really bad areas.

I used a Rustoleum primer, but probably didn't even need to because the Hammerite instructions say it can be applied to bare metal. If I were to do it again, I'd probably skip the primer step, or if I did decide to use primer, I'd use something more industrial strength, like an automotive etching primer.

BTW, Hammerite is not the same as the Rustoleum "Hammered" finish you might find in a home center. Some people think they the Rustoleum product is the same, but they are not comparable products.
