Include a lifetime JF membership in the auction with the caveat that the buyer MUST complete the Gaucho build in this thread as a condition of the sale.......

I've had a few requests about the price I'm going to set in the auction so I'll just answer it here - the reserve price in the auction will be set at the amount I've spent on parts/materials to build it so far (no charge for my labor ).

Sad to see this build end. I have been following it and was hoping to see it all the way through. It was awesome while it lasted. You should put a link of the build thread on Ebay so bidders can see the hard work and craftsmanship you've put into it. To be honest I don't think you can get the fair amount for what you have put into it. I've also contemplated working on a jeep for my son or daughter but I'm sure they'll tear it up. Guess they will just have to drive whatever beater might come along.

If I was your son I would beg you not to sell it but that's me.

Here's something for sale from a like-minded individual: 82 Jeep CJ7 Brute truck project

No bed, but the cab and frame stretch are done. $200 seems like a helluva bargain to me.

These were based on a CJ-7, rebuilt on a longer CJ-6 frame, and using a fiberglass stepside bed and fenders made by a company called California Stepside. The half-cab hardtop was modified from a CJ-7 hardtop.

Having recently finished my Retro Wrangler pickup build (photos at the bottom of this post), I've been looking for another project to do, and I've decided to build an updated reproduction of the original Gaucho.

I've collected most of the parts I need for the project (tub, bed, hardtop, a fender and more), and I'm just beginning the fabrication now. If there's interest in following this build I'll document it here.

I should also say that I'm building this one for sale - I've already got two Jeeps and don't really have a need for a third (I know, hard to believe ). My initial plan is to fabricate the tub, bed, fenders, tailgate and (possibly) half-cab hardtop, and then sell this "kit" of parts to someone who wants to drop the parts on their Scrambler frame. It will be a great replacement for someone who's got a rustbucket Scrambler they want to rebuild. What I'm building will be a direct replacement for a Scrambler tub (and a Scrambler half-cab will be the right size for the tub I build), or a CJ-7 or Scrambler frame could be lengthened for a longer wheelbase if that's what the eventual owner would like to do.

Here are some photos from the 70's showing the original Gaucho pickups:

Below is the project I just finished. It is based on a 2006 Wrangler Unlimited; the frame was lengthened 22.5 inches; the bed is the same size as the classic Willys pickups; the fenders are custom; the tailgate is custom and incorporates a CJ7/CJ8 tailgate logo; and the hardtop is custom, made from bits and pieces of Jeep military and export parts. It's also got a soft top with Sunrider, modified from the original LJ soft top.

dude, this idea is awesome and I would love to see more pics as well as stories regarding the gaucho

If you're interested in more pictures and stories about the original Gaucho, there were 4 magazine articles published about the original:

- Four Wheeler, July 1977

- Off Road, January 1977

- Pickup, Van & 4WD, April 1977

- JP Magazine, May 1999 (actually a re-edit of the PV&4WD article)

I've managed to collect all of the original issues, they turn up on eBay from time to time - if you watch for them I'm sure you'll be able to find them eventually.

If you're interested in more photos of my Gaucho, I can't imagine what I haven't posted a photo of along the course of this thread, but if there's something specific, let me know and I'll post more photos.

Jeff

This truly is none of my business, and I apologize in advance, but I just have to speak. I know you were building this for your son and you changed your mind. I went back a few pages but I couldn't find any specific reason for your decision, except that some folks don't feel like a 16 YO should have such a fine vehicle. It has kind of left me hanging. I, too, have a 16 YO son and we are building a Jeep together. I wouldn't trade that opportunity for anything. There is just no way on this earth that I could ever duplicate the skill and care you have put into this build, but my gift to my son is still very important. When he is finaly driving it I will always know that it was by my hand that he achieved, and to me, that's one of the important things about fatherhood, whether he participated in the build or not. J, this is no criticism, but a respectful request to go through it in your mind again, before it is too late. You and your son can both be very proud of your creation.

I apologize again and I mean no offense to you or anybody who reads this, but I feel like you are about to lose something.

Respectfully submitted-

S Kerr

Jeff can speak for himself, but the original idea wasn't to build it for his son, it was to replicate in a modern interpretation something that was built 30 years ago... read the whole thread and you will see how it started and where it is now... might take you a while though

I hope you get some good bucks for all your hard work.

If you type in the word "gaucho" into the e-bay search, there are a few ladies purses
that pop up that are at a higher price than this fine Jeep! How sad is that?!

Good luck with the sale!
