Cab ?????
Hey jscherb, I'm wandering why you don't use a CJ10A cab w/a Scrambler top to cut down on all the mods?

1. The Scrambler hardtop is too long to fit on properly a CJ-10a cab by 1.5" - the CJ-10a cab is 55" from firewall to the back wall of the tub; the Scrambler bulkhead sits at 56.5" behind the firewall. 2. Even if the length of the Scrambler hardtop was correct, it would need to be modified anyway because the back bottom edge of the Scrambler top rises to go over the tub edge and bulkhead, while the CJ-10a tub is the same level all around 3. I didn't want to give up the extra 1.5" of space in the cab, some people even find the space in the Scrambler cab too tight. Even though I made the Gaucho cab/hardtop the same size as the Scrambler cab, I considered making it longer, like the Brute or Retro Wrangler cabs. In the end I decided to go with Scrambler length so that a Scrambler half-cab soft top would fit, if the eventual owner of the Gaucho wanted a soft top. 4. Used CJ and YJ tubs are plentiful and not too expensive, it's a bit harder to find a CJ-10a tub, and almost certainly more expensive if you consider that I bought my tub locally and it's pretty likely I wouldn't find a CJ-10a tub locally and would have to pay freight or make a very long trip with a rented trailer to buy the tub, if I could even find one without buying the rest of the CJ-10a it was attached to. 5. Buying a used CJ/YJ tub also gave me the roll bar, which I wanted on the Gaucho; CJ-10a's don't have them so I'd have to buy that separately.

I've had a few PM's and emails in the last few days asking me about the status of the Gaucho, so here's an update.
I haven't done anything on the Gaucho since I posted the photos of the roll bar pads I installed, and it is still for sale, although I'm not trying very hard to sell it, for two reasons. First, I haven't decided if I want to finish it myself, and second, if I go ahead with the Safari cab project, it would be very handy to have a CJ around as a test platform for fitting the top components. I sold the Scrambler, so the Gaucho is the only CJ I've got at the moment. But if anyone is interested in buying the Gaucho, I will consider offers. ![]() And an update on the Safari cab project - I've got the two TJ models I ordered and I lengthened one, making it LJ. I've started building the components for the scale model Safari cabs, probably I'll start the thread on that soon... ![]()

Jeff, I looked back at the door rebuild, and don't see any mention on where you would get weather strip. There's a guy on CJOffroad looking for it. He's got a Scrambler with fixed vent windows, and cant seem to find the right parts. CJOffroad.com - Weatherstrip moulding for vent windows

Gee, makes me glad my -10a is an '84. I don't think I even know what the fixed wing stripping looks like, I would think you could find something at McMaster's Carr...

I found the weatherstripping at JC Whitney. They have all of the Jeep rubber.

After much searching, I think this might work...
the 2-piece part was a bit confusing becaues it looks like 1 piece, but it does appear to be about right. If by 2-piece they mean the pair, then I guess that makes a little bit of sense. cb |

I had a random thought this morning...
If I decide to finish the Gaucho, I've told you guys it would be on a stretched YJ frame with YJ running gear, I'd ditch the lengthened Scrambler frame it is sitting on now. So I was wondering... if I go ahead and finish it, maybe I should continue the build in a thread in the YJ section of JeepForum instead of here? After all, building it the way I would plan to would mean that the Gaucho is really a stretched YJ with a CJ front clip, so wouldn't the build belong there?

Kinda like the axe that has been in the family for 30 years. Sure it has had the handle replaced 5 times and had the head replaced once, but it is still the same axe. |

Maybe it's time to move the vent window discussion to a separate thread please, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the Gaucho build.

I think you should keep the build thread here. It started here, it should finish here, in my opinion. Plus, I think it would be better to have it all in one thread.
BTW- I am glad to see it seems like you are leaning more and more towards finishing it! |

I think it should stay here as well.
