Mebbe so, but I just checked the four magazine articles I have about the original Gaucho (3 from the 70's and one from the 90's), and two of the four call it a stepside, and the other two just mention "California Stepside". I guess I'll just continue their error

Sounds like a good idea, but I think I'll leave that kind of stuff for the buyer.

The inner frame is welded in place, this will support the outer skin panels, and the logo panel is cut to size.

All that's left to do is cut out the inside panel (a simple rectangle) and the outer panel, which will look like a "picture frame" behind which the logo panel will go, and then bond the panels to the inner frame. Might possibly get the parts cut out today, but bonding it all together will have to wait for Friday, I have jury duty Wednesday and Thursday this week.

PS: Anyone going to the Jeff Daniels Jeep Show on September 26? I'm thinking of driving the Retro down there. http://www.jeffdanielsjeeps.com/events/details.php?id=31

I did manage to get the tailgate skins cut, bent and fit today, here's a couple of photos. On the right, the logo is held on with magnets. All I've got to do now is cut the hole in the skin for the logo panel and then the entire tailgate will be ready for final assembly. You can't really tell this in the photos, but the outer skin is recessed 1" from the edge rails, and it's got a folded lip on all four edges where it joins to the rails. When I bond it all together with structural adhesive, this lip will seal the seams permanently from water incursion and rust. I'lll probably finish it all up this Friday.

And BTW, I'm sure nobody was wondering about this, but the Gaucho turned out to be exactly the same length overall as a Scrambler, even though it's got 10" more wheelbase. The reason is the Scrambler's spare carrier makes it as long as the Gaucho's bed. When I rolled the Gaucho out of the garage today to work on it I noticed this so I decided it was worth a photo. In this photo the noses are lined up and you can see the rear of the Gaucho lines up with the back of the Scrambler's spare.

PS: I am still planning on selling the Scrambler as I mentioned in a post a few months ago... I had planned to remove the World Cab to prep the Scrambler for sale the week I hurt my shoulder, and the injury prevented me from monkeying with big heavy objects like the hardtop. Now that the topless season is just about over, I might just wait until the spring to sell it, I'm not quite sure.

Both of your Pick-up projects are quite remarkable. You'd think you've been doing this kind of work your whole life. I am planning to attend the Jeff Daniel's Jeep show and would like to see the "Retro" up close. Are you planning to show it at the event?

Thank you. If I go to the Daniels show, yes, I would bring the Retro to show.

They aren't as nice as the pictures make them seem. If I did anything with them (which is doubtful), I'd paint them. The chrome is beyond saving. I've just got them to be able to roll the Gaucho in and out of the garage and to be able to make accurate measurements for fabrication.

Thank you. I understand the time issue, but hey, this is only my second build, the first was the Retro, how do you know you don't have the talent if you haven't tried yet? I didn't know myself until I started the Retro build a little over 18 months ago.

Jury duty was canceled for today, so I was able to cut the hole in the outer panel for the logo; I don't have enough structural adhesive on hand so I'll have to bond it all together tomorrow.

Here's a photo of today's work with the planned graphics superimposed on it to mock up the final look

i like the look of the tailgate, except for the CJ-9 IMO. Great job so far. Any ideas on paint?

I don't plan to paint it other than primer - whoever buys it can get it painted whatever color they like. Same for the graphics - since I'll sell it in primer, I won't apply any graphics, I'll make up the decals and let the new owner decide if they want to apply them or not.

If it doesn't sell in primer and I'm forced to continue the build to a point where I can unload it, then I'd paint it. In that case, probably some flavor of yellow similar to the original Gaucho.

BTW, this is probably the set of decals I'll make to give to the buyer of the Gaucho. This set provides some options, for example, "Gaucho", "4 Wheel Drive" or nothing on the side of the hood. (Or he could put the big "Gaucho" on the door like the original ). There will be multiple copies of the necessary decals as appropriate. Probably do them up in black (for a yellow or other light colored paint) and silver (for dark colors).

Anything I'm missing?

I'm not a big fan of all the different fonts... especially the Jeep/truck version.

any chance of doing the 'truck' portion similar to either of the 'wheel-drive' fonts or curves?

I'd think at a minimum, at least they'd look consistant with each other

Mostly I'm following the factory's lead. The word "Truck" is an exact reproduction of the hood side emblem on the 1948 Willys pickup. The "stacked" "4 Wheel Drive" graphic was on the tailgate of the same truck that year. In 1949, Willys switched the hood side to the "long script" "4 Wheel Drive" which I've also included, and in 1949 they also used the "stacked" "4 Wheel Drive" on the tailgate. The word "Jeep" on the side of the tub is hard to get away from, as is the embossed "Jeep" on the tailgate (which I forgot to include in the graphic set I posted, I'll fix that), so pretty much everything in the set has a factory precedent, except perhaps the Gaucho font, and in that case I've copied the original.

I still think you should make a small plaque with something to the effect that the vehicle is designed by Jeff Scherb. Put your brand or signature on it, man! Similar to the "Last of a Great Breed" found on some of the 86 CJ7s. Yours could be the silhouette of your CJ9 and "The First of its Kind"

Thanks, but it's not about me, it's about the Jeep. I'm sure the buyer of the Gaucho won't care a bit about having my name on it, and would probably remove my name if I put it on there anyway.
