Gas in the Crankcase

I checked the oil in my CJ8 yesterday and the level was high and smelled like gas. It's carbureted and won't start without putting some gas directly into the carb. Is there a way that gas is draining down into the crankcase?

Yep, bad diaphram on your fuel pump. Don't run it till your change oil and pump.

x2. you are more than likely pumping fuel into your crankcase that explains the loss of prime on initial starts meaning you have to put fuel in your carb. Try replacing the fuel pump.

The fuel pump is maybe three years old. Could it have gone bad just sitting there with very little use?

Yes it could

also, just how much gas do you put in to start it. It could run down past your rings into the crankcase but the pump is much faster.

Not a lot. It wouldn't be enough to raise the oil level that much

this happened to my 83 silverado during a 1 year deployment. It sat at the farm covered up for a year and long behold when i aired the tires, started it up after a femonths after a fresh oil change my levels rose.

Ditto to the others and to what John said.
