Fuel sender R&R begins...
I ran out of gas yesterday about a mile from my driveway but I carry a can with about 1.5gal with me because the fuel gage doesn't work..I figured this would be a good time to R&R the tank and sender..The tank looks good,no rust in it and the outside looks good too..I removed and tagged all the fuel lines(Man there are a lot of fuel lines) I ordered a strap and a sending unit..I can't beleive the guy that took the old body off and replaced it with a fiberglass body before I bought the jeep didn't run new fuel lines etc..I will replace everything while I have it apart..I am going to remove all the seats and do the inside with a brush/roll on bedliner and also do a lot of wire brushing and painting the underside befor I re-install the tank..I wonder if I really need all those fuel lines anyway..There are some running to a thing in the rear wheel well but I don't have a clue what it's for..I guess I will figure it out..If anyone has done this to there jeep and have any tips I need all the help I can get...I checked the gauge and it works then I checked the sender with an ohm meter and nothing..I should have my sender by next weekend..Thanks all...Fred Oh Yea.I have been writing down my miles and I went 234 miles on a 15gal tank of gas with my 4.56 gears but I never get it above 55mph (2750 rpm) mostly around 35mph..I thought that was real good milage for around town..
I just ordered a new tank too (Better safe than sorry)

It's not too bad taking the tank out. The part that sux the worst is trying to get the fuel filler neck hoses back on with the .75 inches of space you have to work with. REMEMBER to install the sender with the float arm offset to the center of the tank so it doesn't get hung on the inside. As for the thing you're talking about, is it this:
![]() I had always assumed that was a rollover check valve, but it doesn't make sense that it would be setup that way. I ripped that pic off a thread in here, but I can't find the thread now. Maybe the person who took it will pop in and comment.

rollover valve
The picture is of the rollover check valve and the liquid check valve. The rollover valve (small and gold color) is VERY hard to find, and finding a used one in good shape on a salvage Jeep is tough. Collins Bros. Jeep used to have some.
Some Jeep owners have bypassed the system, but local laws may make that a bad move. In the event of a roll, obviously this valve should stop the flow of fuel. I agree that tank removal is quite easy, and worthwhile. I cleaned, sealed and reused my steel tank, but a new poly is a great way to go. Do check the sending unit float as mentioned- a faulty read will occur if it hits the side of the tank. If your fuel and temp gauges work, consider yourself lucky. These things go out like cheap Christmas tree lights. Make sure you disconnect the battery before working on the fuel/sender system. Hope this helps. CJPoorhouse

I put in a new steel tank and a new sender and it seems to be working fine for now...
